POLL: User interface AND the green checkmark for links

(Don’t forget to vote on the poll!)

Am I the only one who believes this? I have sent a complaint to Avast, stating the following:

"The new engine is NOT user friendly. The one that came right before was MUCH better. The new one is terribly confusing and not user friendly one bit. I hate it so badly. Everything is just crammed to the left hand side like a pile of confusion. At least with the other one, we had actual titles that could be READ from the get go. Images? It was perfect how it was with the last engine.

The second concern I have is the annoying popup that appears every time I hover over the green checkmark (you know, the one that says that a link is safe). It’s SO annoying. I can’t believe someone thought this was a good idea. It’s NOT.

As a paying customer, I find that so frustrating that I’ll have to remove that feature. It bothers me to no end. And then it takes like 10 seconds to disappear. NOT happy.

This is the only complaint I have ever had with Avast. The the other engines that I have seen as a paying customer, I was fine with them. And the checkmarks was unobtrusive with the other engines. I am certainly not happy with the upgrade.

These changes are ones that might bring me to not renew my license with Avast once it expires. Assuming the changes are not reverted back to what they were in the last engine (OR greatly improved over the current version), I am sad to say I might go back with Kaspersky. A shame, because I’ve always loved Avast since the first time I had tried it. I fell in love with the functions (which were VERY user friendly, well for a programmer like myself anyhow).

Avast has always had all the nifty option tweaks I could work with, unlike any other antiviruses out there. But seeing how the new engine is destroying the feel I had as a user, it feels confusing more than anything for me."

On top of things, the urls are OFTEN blocked by the green checkmark. WTF?

well, as i posted yesterday in http://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=137278.0 i have a BIG problem with the check mark… on some sites it stays stuck and is displayed at all times, not only when hovering the mouse on a link.

in slashdot’s case, when i visit the front page first time after opening firefox the check marks don’t show, however if i visit an article and then i return to the front page… a lot of green check marks start to be visible and it cannot even be turned off :frowning:

What green checkmark? Can you please post a screenshot of it? Thanks

screenshot is posted in the post i linked above

edit: freshly made screenshot attached now to this post. I pressed right-click in the middle of the plain text to show the context menu and that the checkmarks do not disappear.

oops … thanks for the hint … :o

btw.: I don’t see them – but if I would, I just would disable that functionality … absolutely unusable that way!

By all means, I will also post a pic! This one is to demonstrate the HUGE annoying rectangle that appears. Yesterday, I was on stackoverflow and what the hell??? It was appearing every freaking place I moved the cursor. That is NOT normal to have a huge rectangle appear out of nowhere for no reason! The old green checkmark was fine. A bit like McAfee Site Advisor that I use. I use that and WooT.

@Rassilon: thanks for the link you provided.

@Everyone, I filed a complaint to Avast, and I think you guys should do the same to let them know we’re NOT happy about the changes.

I can’t believe 9 people said they see no problem. Makes you wonder if they even use web browsers

It automatically disappears after 3 seconds here.

  1. So essentially you are discarding views that differ from yours. The problem being when you have more negative options in a poll, if they don’t marry up with their view, then they only have one choice. So making disparaging remarks because their choice doesn’t agree with yours is a bit rich.

I just wonder which user interface your are talking about “I feel lost only with the user interface.” Commonly people are likely to feel this means the avast user interface. If so, a poll really should only have one question and that question needs to be clear.

  1. It doesn’t appear unless you move the mouse over the avast online security check mark, so for me I rarely see it. If it does come up as has been said it closes after three seconds.

Seriously dude? After 3 seconds? Yesterday I was on stackoverflow and every two seconds after a box disappeared, a new one appeared. So, yes I think that people clearly are not using web browsers if they’re not seeing those pop up all the time. Or they’re blind. And clearly, I’m not the only serious internet user thinking that. And you would have noticed that the small checkboxes are obstructing the view. But hey, maybe you’re not a serious internet user if you didn’t notice that.

I had to disable that feature. NOT happy about that.

As for the UI itself, it is not the same as what Avast represents. Now it looks like a combination of Avast and a candied down style. Also, now everything is crammed up on the left side. That is NOT cool.

Also, I have clear choices: one about the UI, another about the checkboxes, another one for both and then neither. So, unless someone can’t read English, those choices were clear in and out of themselves. But hey, maybe you didn’t grasp the meaning of what I wrote. That’s ok, no worries
If you need me to simplify it for you, ask me and I’ll be glad to simplify it.

@Asyn: Yesterday I was on stackoverflow and every two seconds after a box disappeared, a new one appeared. Besides, they are HUGE. Don’t tell me that this is acceptable. It’s not one bit. Not when you’re on a website that has a few links, a lot of JavaScript etc.

i understand the lay out was better in avast 8 i found and the animation too. but avast 9 is the new look and im giving it a good look over and im enjoying it now

So wait, you are saying that since Avast 9 is the new look that it means that it “has” to become the new Avast?

I see a lack of responses for the side of the OP
I agree with him/her. The big check marks are quite invasive and in the way. I noticed that too. I’m not a paying customer, but it doesn’t mean I shouldn’t enjoy the product fully.

As for the interface, I did prefer the one from Avast 7. The 8th one was good too though. But I don’t like the new one.

It doesn’t “have” to become the new avast…it already is!

It seems as if this poll is backfiring on the OP.

If you wait a while even more bugs will be fixed.
It is well known that someone somewhere will have an occasional issue…so give it some time.

I too am fed up with these GOD DAMNED green checkmarks, on my web pages
HOW THE HELL DO I GET RID OF THE DAMN THINGS
I have tried googling, and reading the forums, and finally spent time to actually set up an account just to ask.

Go into the Browser Protection settings ( AOS = Avast Online Security ) and uncheck the site checking box - I’m not sure what its called now as I don’t use the Browser Protection add-on.

Seriously?

Open each browser and click on the Avast Online Security icon > Settings > uncheck Search Engine Results and / or
Enable popups on search results page

Done!
