I have a program called ponger.exe - it pings every minute.
I can’t get it to run (start) unless I disable Avast, start Ponger,
and then start Avast (i.e start/stop on access protection.)
If avast is running prior to starting ponger I get an error message:
“dispatcher initialization error trapping exceptions.”
Is there some way of getting Ponger to run while Avast is running?
I have a download manager - what is the name of the file scanner
that should be invoked at the end of every download?
Which is your operational system?
Is WebShield allowed to connect the Internet?
avast is not a firewall, shouldn’t be blocking the ping.
OS= Widows95A, Webshield is connected to Net,
Avast blocks startup of Ponger: must disable Avast,
(stop on access protection), start Ponger, and then
start Avast (start on access protection) to get both
programs to work.
The error message was “shrinker.err: dispatcher initialization error
trapping exceptions.” I contacted Savant-Software, (they make
Ponger), and was told “Avast is probably not allowing shrinker to
expand the executable for Ponger. We use shrinker to compress
the executables and prevent reverse engineering.”
thanks.
Although avast is an antivirus and should block the execution of any code if it’s clean… :
Can you locate the executable that shrinker uses for expanding the Ponger?
If so, use the Exclusions lists.
For the Standard Shield provider (on-access scanning):
Left click the ‘a’ blue icon, click on the provider icon at left and then Customize.
Go to Advanced tab and click on Add button…
For the other providers (on-demmand scanning):
Right click the ‘a’ blue icon, click Program Settings.
Go to Exclusions tab and click on Add button…
You can use wildcards like * and ?.
But be carefull, you should ‘exclude’ that many files that let your system in danger.
Not true, avast! doesn’t block Shrinker-compressed executables (unless they are found infected, but you’d see the “Virus found!” dialog in that case).
Is it enough to stop Standard Shield (instead of the whole resident protection)?
Are you running ponger “manually”, or do you have it start automatically when windows boot?
