Pop-up virus?

Second time I got this webpage pop-up: “Attention! Your drivers are old. You need to urgently renew your drivers.”

If memory serves, I also got it both times after navigating away from HuffingtonPost to another site, though I was redirected to Google which is where I went to HufffingtonPost from.

I closed the pop-up and browser (IE8) through task manager.

Anyone know what this pop-up is or why I’ve gotten it twice now?

Thanks.

Well, I would not follow the link in the pop-up in any case. Possible it is a device connected to rogue malware. If possible, could you screenshot this pop-up if it comes up again?

Alt+PrintScreen will capture it and open Paint>Edit>Paste. Save as a .jpeg file, not as bitmap as a .jpeg will be small enough to attach in “Attachments and other options” below. Suggest saving .jpeg to desktop so you can find it more easily.

If not having problems with hardware drivers, leave well enough alone. Drivers are always re-installed or upgraded, never renewed.

Thanks. Will try and get a screen shot if it arises again.

Ironically I got the same thing; I just happened to find this post regarding this particular case just be doing a Google search. Any how, I even found this little window of Internet Explorer that was joined by this error this person posted about. I got it too today, to say the least. After hitting OK then it came up with this window of this site that claims your computer is unprotected and that it acts like it’s scanning for bad stuff. I didn’t know what to do so I shut down my computer immediately after closing that site. I was surprised to find out not much when I first attempted to do a web search about this error, it wasn’t until I found this that I didn’t find anything else.

VFN,

Here is an update on where this pop-up has been seen recently: http://stopmalvertising.com/malvertisements/ffupdate.org-several-high-profile-websites-hit-by-a-rogue-ad.html Just scroll down to the body of the report to read.

Yes someone else bumped into this ad site http://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=96920.0.

Got another pop-up at the following site: http://nymag.com/author/jonathan%20chait where I’ve encountered popups before. I emailed their site about it but to no avail I guess.

I checked the site with VirusTotal and it came up clean. I tried Sucuri but it didn’t recognize the website as valid.

I attached a jpeg of the pop-up. Maybe someone can tell me something about it, though it sure looks generic.

Thanks.

Thanks. And Virus Total finds it clean.

So I’m guessing that these Nymag pop-ups are due to them and not in anyway a reflection on my system?
