Pop-ups about "JS:Redirector-BXI [Trj]" upon opening a new page in Firefox

Hello,

I seem to have a little virus problem. I have the latest free version of Avast installed. Almost every time I open a new page in Firefox, Avast generates pop-ups indicating that it has blocked a harmful webpage or file, sometimes multiple times. The infection is specified as JS:Redirector-BXI [Trj] and the process affected is just “firefox.exe”. I’m assuming this is a JavaScript related issue, but I haven’t been able to find a permanent fix yet. I am well aware that free software will often try to install malware that causes such issues, but I have not installed any such software lately. This has only started happening very recently, and the only software I installed recently is CCleaner, which I doubt is the culprit here.

I have tried a clean reinstall of Firefox, both a full scan and a boot-time scan using Avast (which came up with nothing), a Malwarebytes Anti-Malware scan (which also came up with nothing), starting Firefox in Safe Mode, none of which has fixed the problem. The only extensions I have are AdBlock Plus and the extension that comes with Avast (Avast Online Security), which is disabled anyway. Firefox is my default web browser, and this issue only happens in Firefox and not in Internet Explorer. The only thing I did that fixed the problem was renaming “firefox.exe” and running the renamed file, but I am looking for a more permanent solution. I am using Windows 8.1 64-bit and the latest version of Firefox.

Please let me know if you require further information. Any advice on how to get rid of this malware would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Edit: I had been connecting to the Internet through a different router at a different location (in fact in a different country) before this issue appeared. In fact, this issue popped up immediately after I started connecting through the current one. Furthermore, I have this issue on both of my laptops, which worked fine before. This leads me to believe that the problem is with the router/network and not with the computer itself. However, resetting the router did not fix the problem.

Hi Puk, welcome to the forum

Look at this tutorial https://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=53253.0

Scroll down to “Farbar Recovery Scan Tool” and follow the directions.
Attach both FRST.tx and Additions.txt logs in your next reply.
As soon as an expert is online and available he/she will help you.

Greetz, Red.

Hi Rednose,

FRST.txt and Addition.txt are attached. I have also updated my original post with more details which might help. Thanks.

Could you let me know if this stops it

[*]You can find the logfile at C:\AdwCleaner[S0].txt as well.

Hi essexboy,

I no longer seem to have the problem after running an FRST fix on both of my laptops, thanks a lot for that. Unfortunately, I accidentally ran it a second time on one of my laptops so the first fix log was overwritten. I am still attaching the second Fixlog.txt. The original fix log on my other laptop is also attached (Fixlog_2.txt).

I have also performed “Clean” with AdwCleaner although it doesn’t seem to have done much. In any case, the AdwCleaner log is attached.

Any idea what this problem might be caused by? How can I be sure that I am rid of it and how can it be avoided in the future?

Many thanks.

Basically I just emptied all your temp folders where it was residing

Any further problems

No other problems so far, thanks a lot.
