port 110 already in use

When starting my laptop, I get the following:

avast!: Mail Scanner warning

avast! will not be able to protect incoming mail (POP3 protocol).
Error: 10048

Port 110 is already in use, specify another port value (see section
'Cooperation with other software' in 'Manual Setting of Mail Protection'
in help).

I would like to keep scanning incoming mail (surprise, surprise). Any help out there as to what could be the problem?

Thanks,
mcs

Well, do you use any spam killer?
I think the best you can do is download the version 4.5 Beta because it uses a new mail detection that will work automatically. Please, set up your email account just as avast does not exists. It will detect the pop3/smpt/imap ports and scan your messages.

Instructions here: http://forum.avast.com/index.php?board=11;action=display;threadid=8044;start=0

Can you make a try and see if it’s ok? Thanks.

How do I download the 4.5 Beta version? Avast! update doesn’t pick it up, and I can’t find a link to it on the website . . . .
???

The beta is only for board members. Only the final 4.5 will be on the website.

Update instructions

If you do not feel confortable by using the 4.5 beta, can you wait until 13th November, Saturday, and download the official release of avast 4.5.

I thought you will click on the link I’ve posted before :-[
Eddy gave you the same link.

mcs,

If you would rather wait as mentioned for the final release of 4.5, you can manually change the ports settings of your email client and Avast ini file to Ports 26 for 25 and 111 for 110.
Addtional help for manually configuring Avast can be found here by searching the forum, or in the Avast Help file.

This should workaround the error and allow Avast to function normally.

I too am waiting for the Final release. I test Beta versions often, but like to have a Final for my own in house use.
