Hi Guys,
I have just come back from a 2 week holiday and have noticed a lot of “bounced” email messages for emails that I have not sent.
I use Outlook 2007 for my email client and am running the latest version of Avast Internet Security (7.0.1456) and own the domain “www.xxxxxxx.com.au” (that is not the really domain name as I thorught it would not be a good idea to include it in this forum
)
The “To:” addresses of the bounced emails look to me to be randomly generated, eg: alphone2345@xxxxxxx.xom.au, jessie867gfh@xxxxxxx.xom.au, velma2345df@xxxxxxx.com.au etc.
I have run a boot scan and I have attached a screen shot of the log.
I am also running the lastest paid version of Malwarebytes and it is not finding anything.
Does anybody have any ideas?
Thanks
Regards
Greg
You’ll probably get better (and more helpful) answers from the experts on such things here, but in the meantime …
I wouldn’t totally rule out the possibility of an infection at your end, but from your description of your system it’s probably unlikely. Most commonly, this situation arises when someone else, who has your addy in their address book, has become infected and is sending out junk with your addy shown as the “From”. I’ve run into this myself a few times, and about all you can do is warn likely contacts so they can do a thorough check on their own systems.
Avast, and also in my case my ISP, will catch outgoing mass mailings, which is why I say it’s unlikely the original messages came from your system.
Thanks for the reply and explanation…sounds like you could be correct.
Thanks again
Regards
Greg
