possible keylogger sent by ex ;-(

Hi,
Really hope you can help me as this is causing me such angst and upset ;-( I am not proficent with anything to do with spyware removal…in fact it would be probably fairly shocking to most of you how un-informed I am. I do WANT to learn though so am ready to be informed and hopefully supported!
Here goes-
I am fairly sure I have been sent (another) remote keylogger by an ex or his ex-partner recently (bane of my life previously). My previous PC crashed Im sure due to this and I didnt even know what a keylogger was at that time. My new PC had Norton security intitially which ran out and so I now have Avast protecting me. I have been very careful not to open any email links (zoho mail) however a week ago I did click on an email (but not the link) and stupidly entered the address in the email through firefox. The web address/page meant nothng to me. I didnt think anything of it at the time just then deleted the whole email. Since then I had this intuitive feeling that something just isnt right.

Today I received a NEW unexplained untitled email from my ex and just deleted it automatically to be safe. However when I checked my account settings for todays date I saw that there had already been two private IP addressess shown in MY Activity History). FYI I have not logged on to my email account from any other PC today.

I have tried looking through task manager/processess but to be honest it is all double-dutch to me
I really need a simple-step by-step way of finding/isolating/removing/protecting. (I did read the advice page and the forums and the advice on different spyware programs e.g malwarebytes/spybot etc but am still slightly confused and also nervous about follwing the right one and the process I follow first. I am also nervous about clicking on ANY links now ().

Sorry this is so long…Im so tired and fed-up with a vindictive ex so please forgive me.

P.s.Avast shows recent virus infections but I dont know if any are key-loggers.

Thanks so much…

Hello spywarenewbie and welcome to the avast! Forums

Install Malwarebytes’ anti-malware from Link1 or Link2 Update Malwarebytes’ then run a quick scan, Then Come back after the scan and post the logs to this topic. To post the logs when replying scroll down to you see Additional Options, click that then click on the browse button to attach the logs.

Thankyou. I will do.
Just thought I would mention that my hunch appears to be correct. There IS an apparent keylogger (win32 spyeye) captured and isolated for the time being. I will do as you suggest.

Hi Coolmario,
I downloaded malwarebytes anti-malware as you suggested and completed a full scan. Memory, registry, folders and files APPEAR all free of infection. I am concerned though that a key-logger might still be hidden as I am still suspicious that there appeared to be unknown activity in my email activity history log yesterday? (I have two unknown IP addresses which I dont think belong to me).
Where do I go from here? It is clear from my Avast log that a keylogging attempt (see previous entry) has been made. Do I need to do anything with Avast etc?

Ultimately how can I protect myself in the future re email, websites, password safety. e.g I have heard of keyscrambler? BTW I havent tried accessing my email etc today-yet!

Sorry lots of questions I know.

All help much appreciated.

if you are still suspicious… follow the guide here and attach the log`s then Essexboy will have a look when he arrive here later today

I can hardly believe that your ex made a keylogger just to infect you, monitor your computer.I am sure it was a spam message, actaully your’s ex email may have been “hacked” and it sends spam messages with malware etc.
She doesn’t take the blame, does she?

She doesn't take the blame, does she
i think this is the she.....and the ex is the he ;)

Hi Pondus.

I tried downloading the OTL but avast thought it was suspicious.
I now have parentologic pc health, malwarebytes anti-spyware and avast on the PC.
Today funny things going on with an email account (difficulty logging in etc) and later webpages coming up with only text.
Also tried to logout 3 times of an email account and it took me to this error page instead:

Server Error in ‘/’ Application.
Runtime Error
Description: An application error occurred on the server. The current custom error settings for this application prevent the details of the application error from being viewed remotely (for security reasons). It could, however, be viewed by browsers running on the local server machine.

Details: To enable the details of this specific error message to be viewable on remote machines, please create a tag within a “web.config” configuration file located in the root directory of the current web application. This tag should then have its “mode” attribute set to “Off”.

Notes: The current error page you are seeing can be replaced by a custom error page by modifying the “defaultRedirect” attribute of the application’s configuration tag to point to a custom error page URL.

Guys, can you help me? Fed up to back teeth with it all and need guidance ???
Thanks

Yes I could be a he or she :-*

OTL is safe - do not let Avast sandbox it or it will not run correctly… This is just an analysis run initially

Hi Essexboy. Have downloaded both OTL and aswMBR and have saved all three logs to my PC.
What do I do now?
P.s. Is it safe to attach the logs here (Will all my dirty linen be shown in public?! ::slight_smile:

The logs will be safe on the forum but members of the forum like me will be able to see it. but don’t worry its safe

Ok here they are.

You can remove them now by modifying your post

I can see no indication of a key logger ;D

But if you wish I could use a stronger tool to double check, although I feel it will find nothing

thankyou!

avast did appear to find a keylogger attempt earlier though (see previous entry in thread). How do I protect myself and what do you think about key-scrambler? Also can Avast protect my email?
Cheers!

The web mail thing may have been problems on the server looking at the output

Avast will scan the e-mails as you download them. Key scrambler is an option as that will work.

Reference protection I only use Avast and MBAM (when I remember) and have yet to get any kind of infection

Do you wish me to look deeper ?
