Possible Rootkit infection

Hello.
Yesterday I had an alert saying that a rootkit was found. I didn’t take a screenshot, however I remember it was along the lines of:
“SVC IOMAP”:“C:\windows\system32\drivers\IOMAP.sys”.

The only two options where delete and ignore. As it appeared to be a system file (which I now know it’s not, but can be installed with ASUS software), I chose Ignore. I searched for the file in windows explorer and couldn’t find it. This made me try tdsskiller.exe from kaspersky. After selecting all the options and rebooting, tdsskiller.exe only found SPTD.sys (Which was installed with daemon tools).

Next I tried Avast antirootkit(logs attached).First, it detected SPTD.sys and them some writing in red, after a while the bsod appeared and I retried in safe mode under administer(aswMBRadmin.txt). The scan completed and I saved the log.
I then tried again under my normal account and saved the log after it displayed the information in red. Any help is appreciated  (using Windows XP sp3)

Sorry forgot to do the scans, read the sticky the night beforehand, just having one of those days!

This was the rootkit scan about 8 minutes after start ? This is where any suspicious files are flagged. I believe this may be a false positive

However there are two suspect drivers which I will quarantine

How is the computer behaving ? Anything weird happening ?

Warning This fix is only relevant for this system and no other, using on another computer may cause problems

Be advised that when the fix commences it will shut down all running processes and you may lose the desktop and icons, they will return on reboot

Run OTL

[*]Under the Custom Scans/Fixes box at the bottom, paste in the following

:OTL
DRV - File not found [Kernel | On_Demand | Unknown] -- -- (ar0ygz6z)
DRV - File not found [Kernel | On_Demand | Unknown] -- -- (aezr3jq8)

:Commands
[purity]
[resethosts]
[emptytemp]
[CREATERESTOREPOINT]
[Reboot]

[*]Then click the Run Fix button at the top
[*]Let the program run unhindered, reboot the PC when it is done
[*]Open OTL again and click the Quick Scan button. Post the log it produces in your next reply.

The computer is behaving, kinda normally. It’s hard to say as its a very old system.
As for anything weird, it does seem longer to get to the log on screen recently (could be due to disk fragmentation/age in my opinion). Along with frequent “hang-ups”, any example would be with one of my download folders. If I scroll down too fast the folder will freeze and some icons appear duplicated, this is also often coupled with an unresponsive start menu and taskbar.
This can last roughly a minute.

There’s also random-ish hang up in which there appears to be some of the RAM used and very little cpu being used, but the Hard drive going haywire (again possibly due to age, I think).

Team Fortress 2 also appears to hang the system, the mouse cursor can be moved, but ctrl+alt+del, alt+tab, alt+f4 and the windows menu key fail to do anything. The hard drive indicator is unlit apart from a flicker every so often and an application for my keyboard LCD display, indicates little to no cpu useage and a static “MEM” graphic. Although I have re-downloaded the game and yet to test it.
Hope that helps, thanks

Nothing apparent showing now, I did find when I had XP that it really benifited from a clean install every year or so. But, if you wish I can go deeper

Hmm if it’s no bother to you, then I would like you to go deeper.

OK this will let me see any hidden drivers

Download and Install Combofix

Download ComboFix from one of the following locations:
Link 1
Link 2

VERY IMPORTANT !!! Save ComboFix.exe to your Desktop

  • IMPORTANT - Disable your AntiVirus and AntiSpyware applications, usually via a right click on the System Tray icon. They may otherwise interfere with our tools. If you have difficulty properly disabling your protective programs, refer to this link here

[*]Double click on ComboFix.exe & follow the prompts.
[*]Accept the disclaimer and allow to update if it asks

[*]When finished, it shall produce a log for you.
[*]Please include the C:\ComboFix.txt in your next reply.

Notes:

  1. Do not mouse-click Combofix’s window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.
  2. Do not “re-run” Combofix. If you have a problem, reply back for further instructions.
  3. If after the reboot you get errors about programmes being marked for deletion then reboot, that will cure it.

Please make sure you include the combo fix log in your next reply as well as describe how your computer is running now

Hey, sorry for slow reply.

Ran combofix and then manually rebooted. As for hows it’s running now… Cant say to be honest, quite tired and being distracted quite a bit, seems a bit faster but not quite sure, sorry fot eh vagueness.

Not a problem, that revealed that userinit is suspect and another system file is missing, so we will replace and search next

  1. Close any open browsers.

  2. Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.

  3. Open notepad and copy/paste the text in the quotebox below into it:

FCopy:: C:\WINDOWS\system32\dllcache\userinit.exe|c:\windows\system32\userinit.exe

Save this as CFScript.txt, in the same location as ComboFix.exe

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v666/sUBs/CFScriptB-4.gif

Refering to the picture above, drag CFScript into ComboFix.exe

When finished, it will produce a log for you at C:\ComboFix.txt which I will require in your next reply.

THEN

Run an OTL quick scan with the following script

/md5start
i8042prt.*
/md5stop

Attach the resultant log

Here ya go, think everything done right.

OK lets now put the file back where it belongs

Hmm ticked the box next to loaded modules, my bad, should i re-scan?

No, not a problem, seems as though OTL did not copy the file… Lets try Combofix

  1. Close any open browsers.

  2. Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.

  3. Open notepad and copy/paste the text in the quotebox below into it:

FCopy:: c:\i8042prt.sys|c:\windows\system32\drivers\i8042prt.sys

Save this as CFScript.txt, in the same location as ComboFix.exe

Hmm The computer froze after the reboot, I have read that people shouldn’t re run combofix if being helped by someone unless told so. Therefore I haven’t re ran combofix.

From what I have looked up, the file is only used for PS/2 support (I don’t know if this is true or not). If this is the case, then leaving it be is ok with me, as I use USB for both my mouse and keyboard.

As I had a virus, I don’t know which virus it was. Therefore I’m curious to whether my USB flash drives could be infected or not, or even my dad’s PC (Win7). What about my android phone? It hasn’t found a virus, but i’m just curious.

Once again, thanks for your help

If you do not feel that you need the file then not a problem.

As to the infection, it is difficult to say as it was a generic file that was used

This was not one that would attempt to infect a USB drive so you should be OK there

How is the computer now ?

Same as ever I guess, right now a replacement system hard drive is probably needed. Or at least a defrag.

At least I have some piece of mind that the PC most likely is virus free, which is the main thing I guess

Subject to no further problems

I will remove my tools now and give some recommendations, but, I would like you to run for 24 hours or so and come back if you have any problems

Now the best part of the day ----- Your log now appears clean

A good workman always cleans up after himself so…The following will implement some cleanup procedures as well as reset System Restore points:

[*]Open My Computer.
[*]Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
[*]Select the View Tab.
[*]Under the Hidden files and folders heading select Do not show hidden files and folders.
