I noticed after upgrading to the current Avast! program version that there are no longer any browser protection settings, and also that my previous Avast! ad blocker was no longer doing it’s thing. After great frustration I finally figured out a way to get the ad blocker working again. Solution has worked for me on Windows 7 (32 & 64 bit) for Internet Explorer 10.
Step 1: Uninstall Avast! ad blocker via programs and features in Control Panel (if it was installed previously)
Step 2: Find your Avast! installation folder (usually C:\Program Files\AVAST Software), open it and look for a folder called AdBlocker.
Step 3: Open the Adblocker folder and you should see three folders - one each for Chrome, Firefox (FF), and Internet Explorer (IE).
Step 4: Open the IE folder and you should see a windows installer file named ‘avast-adblocker-ie’ - run this file to re-install Avast ad blocker.
Once installation is complete, restart Internet Explorer and a popup should appear telling you that the adblocker is ready for use - click enable and then restart IE again.
I hope this helps others, as I could not find anything about this issue (or didn’t look hard enough lol). 8)
There is NO AdBlocker in Avast 2014. I’d strongly suggest people do not follow “hints” that exploit upgrade bugs that fail to remove the abandonded component’s install folder.
Why go to the trouble of making something work that is no longer supported or updated when you can simply install Adblock https://adblockplus.org/en/features or if you don’t want that then there is also the Tracking Protection lists that can be added for IE from within Manage add-ons
I apologise for the wording of my topic - I never meant to imply that there was ad blocking in the new Avast ( it was pretty obvious there wasn’t when I couldn’t find the option for it). Now that you’ve mentioned the part about the ad blocker - if this program was meant to be made redundant, then don’t you think that better care should have been taken in writing the uninstall script so that it would be fully uninstalled and not likely to cause any problems or confusion later on?
As for Adblock, I had tried that but it would not block ads - possibly because the old Avast ad blocker had not been uninstalled properly, but I’m only guessing. AFAIK, tracking protection lists do not ‘block’ ads they only stop “honest” advertisers from following you across the internet so you will still get ads.
All I have done is reinstated something which, IMHO, is just as efficient as any other program and I’m sure there are others that agree and also have the right to try for themselves. I will continue to use it purely because I find it annoying when companies keep ‘dropping’ useful software from their products - without any warning - just when you have come to rely on it.
Thankyou - you are correct, however it seems you have to get right into the heart of the list settings for it to actually ‘block’ ads though which is not clearly obvious or explained when you install them.
BTW I have gone back to Avast! 8.0.1497.376 because I was experiencing issues with other programs not playing nice with the new version (or vice-versa) - thankfully because of the work I do with computers I had downloaded the offline installer when it first became available.
You don’t have to get into the heart of any settings with Tracking Protection, you just install the lists you want and it works “simple” I have the three lists in the picture installed and I get no ad’s
If you had avasts adblock installed then that will cause Adblock to not function correctly as both add lists from Adblock.
Thanks for the update - I only have TRUSTe installed so that could be why I was having problems with AdBlocker not working. Anyway, all is good now - thankyou kindly for the feedback guys, it is genuinely appreciated
