[POSSIBLY SOLVED] Avast & Mystery Red Ball issue - kills the tray icon

For months I’ve been using Avast = currently 6.0.1367 without problems

Today, when Avast starts the tray icon is accompanied by a red round icon (which appears to be the DSBridge icon).
If I hover over the Avast icon it and the red icon disappear from the task bar.

The only way to get the Avast screen back is to run the program again - this restores the icon but almost any action in the main screen causes the screen to disappear along with the icon.

I’ve disabled sounds in avast - no effect. I’ve done a system restore - no effect. I’ve uninstalled and reinstalled Avast - no effect. I used the save mode remove program - no effect.

Any ieas? Help needed! This is driving me nuts!

Temporarily change your screen resolution and colors to 1024x768 x 32bits (colors). Check if the tray icon is visible. Return to your original resolution settings. Check if the tray icon is still seen. Then report back.

Nope - makes no difference.

I reinstalled (again) … all okay until the tray popup appeared announcing definitions updated. Then the red ball icon appeared next to the avast icon. Seconds later the avast icon disappeared.

It reappears when I rerun from program menu - but when I hover over it to open the gui, it disappears again.

After several instances of the BIG RED BALL - I no longer think it’s anything to do with dsbridge.

I’ve no idea where it comes from … it just appears and then Avast tray icon is disappeared!

It’s making avast almost impossible to use!

Which avast!..?? (Free/Pro/IS)
OS…?? (32/64 Bit - which SP)
Other security related software installed…??

Avast Free

win7 32 sp2

No other security software

Working AOK until earlier today - when it also detected latest CCleaner as malware!

  1. Impossible. There’s no SP2 for W7.
  2. Which VPS are you on…?

Ooops - sp1

VPS - 120205-2

… is that the vps?

Yes.
Try this: Repair avast!:

  1. Control Panel → Add/Remove programs → avast!
  2. Scroll down and click on ‘Repair’.
  3. Follow instructions.
  4. Reboot.

Oh-oh … the Red ball is DSBridge - the associated message is the Encoder could not load lame_enc.dll

Why is this appearing? It never happened before!

I suppose I could stick the dll in the avast folder …??

I’ve tried the Repair several times … it always crashes out with an error message from Win.

Please open a support ticket: http://support.avast.com/index.php?_m=tickets&_a=submit

Okay - can I link the ticket to here? Or must I repeat all this again?

I tried to put the lame dll into the Avast folder but it won’t allow me to paste a file there!

Sure.

Okay - ticket submitted.

I just got a program crash - I managed to find this detail:

Problem Event Name: BEX Application Name: AvastUI.exe Application Version: 6.0.1367.0 Application Timestamp: 4ed3cb98 Fault Module Name: DSOUND.dll_unloaded Fault Module Version: 0.0.0.0 Fault Module Timestamp: 4a6d6234 Exception Offset: 10008010 Exception Code: c0000005 Exception Data: 00000008 OS Version: 6.1.7601.2.1.0.256.1 Locale ID: 1033

I solved this by running the software removal too in safe mode and THEN manually deleting every reference to avast in the registry.

Damn & Blast!!!

The RED BALL is back again - I tried to open the gui from the tray icon - then got a firewall request for avast, accompanied by the sudden appearance of the red icon.

This is absolutely maddening.

Reading this topic i have some questions:

Does that red axe go away when u hover your cursor on it currently?

If thats so…thats a UI glitch and i think i have some clients over here at india u have reported similar issues.

Yes … the red icon disappears immediately I hover over it. Then within a minute or so the avast icon also disappears.

I feel thats a UI glitch…do u see secured in the UI at that point when the tray icon is red?

Or u see in the summary tab of UI that some shield is disabled even if it is enabled?
