posting to newsgroup using Powerpost on port 80 stopped working

Hi,

A few days ago, my ability to upload to news.giganew.com on port 80 using Powerpost v12.2.7.0 stopped working.

I have installed no new programs since this last worked on Sept. 10, 2011. except for Windows updates and Avast auto-updates.

When this happened I assumed it was something with the windows updates, and uninstalled them, but the issue continued. I sent more than a few emails to giganews trying to figure out why this was no longer working, and it’s not working on all my machines, all of which have the latest Avast Free software.

I discovered quite by accident that I could upload using Powerpost while in Safe Mode, still on port 80, but when booting into Windows XP SP3 (all my computers), it will not allow me to upload. Giganews suggested since it was working in Safe Mode, to check my AV program.

I have been unable to find any settings to affect this. I have disabled Avast and still I cannot connect. I have checked firewall settings, I have disabled the windows firewall (only firewall I have), and it still won’t let me upload using Powerpost.

All other functions seems intact. I can still browse the internet, I can still download from my newserver using Forte Agent, I just can’t upload. I have no proxy servers.

I’m stumped!!

Any ideas what to check next?

thanks,

Web Shield Scan all HTTP Traffic - The new feature in the web shield now scans ‘all’ HTTP traffic, so other applications, not necessarily browsers which can also make http connections.

You can’t specify which applications or exclude applications, it is either all or nothing with the new feature. You can check the ‘Scan traffic from well-known browser processes only’ option and that effectively brings the web shield back to scanning as it did before.

I would suggest that you check this option so it doesn’t scan this newsgroup traffic.

But wouldn’t that be some kind of indication that maybe Avast is not related?

I have checked firewall settings, I have disabled the windows firewall (only firewall I have), and it still won't let me upload using Powerpost.

If you see firewall rules, delete them and reboot, so the firewall can ask for re-creation of the relevant rules.

About Avast, I would suggest something, but you say that Avast being disabled has no positive effect.

If you are successful under Windows Safe Mode with Network connection, then maybe something in the “startup” several locations/methods might be causing the problem.

I might have some (mostly blind) ideas, but if Avast is not related, then I’d rather not post them.

Latest: disabled Avast and Firewall and was able to connect using Powerpost. Turned Firewall back on, and could still connect. Turning Avast back on once connected still allowed upload to finish, but when trying to initiate another session, it was blocked again, so it is something with Avast, but there seems no settings to change to make it work.

I’m thinking maybe uninstall it and reinstall latest download, unless there are any more ideas out there.
