Prenvent Avast from starting on boot?

Hi all,

Is there an option to prevent Avast 4.7 Home Edition and all its services from starting when windows boots (other than manually doing it using msconfig and Adminitrative Tools / Services)?

I am running Windows XP Pro SP2.

Thanks

You need to set all services to manual and remove the startup item (ashdisp.exe).
Even this way, like any other antivirus, the system drivers (low level) are loaded.
Why are you trying to do so?

Thanks for the quick reply.

Although I realize that the highest protection comes from running antivirus, spyware and similar apps contantly in the background, I prefer to run them manually instead of having them launch on startup.

I think what I’ll do is just configure Avast’s separate Providers to not run at startup via settings in the Protection Control window.

Thanks again.

You can’t configure the individual providers not to run at start-up the only option is to Terminate and answer Yes to the ‘persist the changes’ question, other wise it will restart on the next boot.

So there are Three possible stated, Running, Paused and Terminated, you can pause or terminate without answering Yes and it will restart on the next boot.

I feel to cripple avast in such a way so it doesn’t run on boot is a waste of resident protection and I can’t see the benefits and you would have to Start the Providers manually and as sure as eggs are eggs you are likely to forget to do this at some point.

avast! is relatively light on system resources so to me it seems a false economy to cripple it in this way, but it is your system and your choice.

You must have one running in background… otherwise, you won’t be protected. You can delay avast loading services, but you should have at least one layer protection running in background. Late could be sorry… you’ll already infected. Remember that not all infections could be cleaner. Better safe than sorry.
