hello, I’m new one here and want to thank you guys for tech. support and free antivirus version as well.
I have a question, I play Colin McRae4 on the network (connected through gamespy) and I recently found out that my PC is infected with few viruses (they’ve been removed now but as far as I remember it was a parite, winlogon (with a window icon in system32, and a few backdoors). Is it possible to get your PC infected while playing games on the network, well I’m no expert here but there still is a constant connection with the internet during the game.
windows xp sp1
c,d drives 10/28gb
amd athlon 1600+
geforce4 128mb
256 ram
I hope I was plain enough.
Any help will be appreciated
As long as webshield is running you should be relatively safe as this will monitor transfers to your system from the net. And yes it is possible to get infected from online games. Have you thought about upgrading to SP2, and do you have a firewall to check outbound traffic ?
Thanks a lot for your advise. I have Ewido antimalware though I tried Core Force once (but I am disappointed with the program as it used to block almost everything). Could you please recommend any trusted firewalls (freeware preferred)
I will also try to upgrade to SP2 as soon as possible
I’ve upgraded to SP2 and installed ZoneAlarm Free already. I’ve selected High Security Stealth mode for ZA. It says the firewall hides my PC from hackers but the program reported more than 3000 intrusions blocked and more than 400 high-rated intrusions of those 3000. Is it normal? And it also turned Windows Firewall off, should I change it and use both? Can I uninstall Ewido now or leave it as it is?
ZA reports the ATTEMPTS at intrusion, mine currently reads 41000, so don’t worry. I’ve turned off the windows firewall, and as for ewido I keep it as an occasional backup unit (update before you use though)
Intrusions blocked is a good thing. This means that whoever/whatever tried to enter your computer was blocked by ZA firewall and did not get in. While 3000 blocked is not so high, 400 high-rated intrusion attemps in such a short time does seem high … though this depends on where you are going on the internet.
Please come back often, learn more, and maybe help others.
