That is a particularly odd thing to ask Para-Noid. This forum is filled with tales of the woes some people have had after updating to v.9. Ignoring the legitimate concerns this should provoke in any sensible computer user and effectively telling somebody to gamble they’ll be OK in the face of the evidence presented here is unhelpful.
By ‘less protection’ you mean the previous Avast versions are less safe than the current version. That is just sophistry. The current version still has to work properly not just at keeping the computer safe but also not causing problems with the other programs you need to use. Otherwise those advantages are rendered useless.

Avast IS is paid for software so I doubt you’ll find any legally provided earlier version other than through Avast themselves.
Earlier versions of Avast (‘Free’) can be found on many safe, legitimate web sites if you Google. In fact I’ve literally just backed up my current Avast v.8.0.1497 from one of them myself. I’ve stored it in a folder on an external HDD along with a fresh download of the Avastclear uninstall tool just in case I have problems with the latest Avast v.9 update. I intend to put off installing that for as long as possible or at least until the apparent bugs are sorted.
Hope I don’t have to use the backup but better safe than sorry.
@ Cluster-Lizard The issues you see here on the forums represent a very miniscule percent of users.
The vast number of users who don’t have issues very rarely post on the forums.
Which would you believe? Twenty people who say the water is too cold?
Or, the one thousand people who are in the water and not complaining? ???
In other words, are you basing your reluctance on the very small number or are you willing to find out on your own? ???
Well, it would be because the silent majority is composed by users with basic knowledge?! Those who only see the problem WHEN pc crashes?!..
Sorry… but you can not put all the users paired with your high level of knowledge and taking it as gospel …
