Prewarning: Avast might crash Broadcom RAID Controller 9670-24i

For several weeks now, we have been struggling with issues on two new customer servers. Just recently, it became apparent that Avast Endpoint Security (the exact component is still unclear) is very likely capable of causing a Broadcom 9670-24i to crash in such a way that Windows (2022 and 2025) crashes with a BSOD approximately 15 to 30 minutes after Avast is installed.

In addition to the BSOD (CRITICAL PROCESS DIED), something happens that I never thought possible: all virtual disks/RAID systems managed by the 9670-24i are effectively ‘destroyed’ in the sense that the VDs are no longer visible to the controller. Furthermore, all hard drives - including the global hot spare - enter an ‘unconfigured bad’ status.

In this state, at least, the drives can be manually set to ‘good’ via the server BIOS. After doing so, the RAID controller detects a foreign configuration, which can then be re-imported into the controller. Windows will subsequently boot again, and the RAID systems/VDs become accessible and usable once more.

Since these findings are still very recent, we will verify them further through additional testing.

We can confirm that Avast Antivirus is the trigger for the BSOD in Windows and following this the VD of the operating System will also crash!
Confirmation from the German hardware manufacturer Wortmann is still pending.
