Pro 4.8 vs Home Free

I want to know how the free edition compares to Pro 4.8 in processing speed.

On some sites and when opening some programs, the delay is significant on the free edition. If I purchase Pro, will that speed be increased? Will the delay be reduced?

Satisfied with free edition, coverage, def downloads, etc. But if inceased service & speed come with Pro, I will buy it.

Since they use the same scanning engine and virus signatures my guess is that they should be the same.

The main difference in the Pro version is the inclusion of a Script Blocker (scans scripts first before allowing them to run), but it would be virtually unnoticeable in the scheme of things.

The main differences in the Home version is the requirement for interactive user input requirement.

What would be more relevant is why you feel avast processing speed is slow, can you expand on why you thing this ?
e.g. what it is that you were doing when you wanted more processing speed ?

Can you tell us how long you have had avast, what OS you are using, what CPU, how much RAM your system has ?

Maybe we should find out what the problem is first.

Grazzi.

OS W2K SP4. 786 MB RAM. Older PC, but works fine. Other data on request. Avast for one year, approx. Oct., 2008.

Web page operating slowly is Facebook/Mafia Wars. Seems to be loaded with high quality images, too many button options, and running scripts (changes data frequently.) At first visit, for some minutes, this site seems to trigger the revolving “A” symbol (Avast! on-access scanner) for long periods. Longer than most other sites and pages. After some period of operation, this processing time is reduced and pages turn over quickly.

On programs, some are symply loaded, such as Wordperfect, QuattroPro, HP Precision Scan. They will always load slower than others.

Most other sites and programs work fine and fast enough for me.

Please stick to one topic and do not post questions in different areas as it makes it hard for the helpers to help you efficiently:

The more medial intensive the site, the more data to be scanned by the Web Shield, so until it is scanned you will see some slowdown, which is inevitable, think yourself lucky you aren’t on dial-up (are you). So when you see the ‘a’ rotating it indicates it is scanning.

The first two programs you mention are relatively heavy on files that would be loaded into memory, etc. and these have to first be scanned. I had no idea what the HP Precision Scan was until this post, if this is only for an HP Scanner, I would have though that this is an infrequently used application and would only be required when you use the scanner, it too is no doubt somewhat on the heavy side.

The main reason for the how long have you had avast, was more to do with if recent, it could be impacted from having another AV or remnants left behind.

So given your system spec I don’t believe that there is anything unusual in your experience, unless prior to this things had been faster, is this the case ?

Also given the above the Pro version, whilst giving slightly better protection (more so when avast 5.0 Pro is released), there wouldn’t be any real difference in the existing performance.

Thank you, DavidR. Very helpful indeed. At least I understand the process.

To defragging, I do weekly maintenance on computer & files. Defrag 1-2 times/mo. Thanks for suggestion.

No problem, glad I could help.
