downloaded today pro version of the avant
running windows xp pro
when i right-click on the blue avast ball then left-click Start avast antivirus - the programme does not start!
What’s wrong?
Hi, las, welcome to the forum.
This sort of thing is usually caused by the remains of another antivirus, or malware.
What was the last AV you had installed prior to Avast? Was it uninstalled?
Any other security software running/installed?
hi and thank you for the reply
it’s a second-hand laptop that i’ve got yesterday only
avast did initial scan after downloading and found a few viruses - i deleted all infected files, uninstalled
home version and installed pro
no other antiviruses in the same laptop - what should i do now? can anyone help?
thank you
I think I know what’s wrong. You don’t need to uninstall the home version to install the pro, you just enter the pro license key into the home version to activate the pro features.
I would suggest a full re-install from scratch:
-Download the full setup file for Pro, “setupengpro.exe”,~38MB, from one of the downloads on this page. Do not download the universal installation file.
-Download the Avast Uninstall Utility from here.
-Disconnect from the net.
-Uninstall Avast from the control panel. Reboot. If you had any trouble with the uninstall, reboot into safe.
-Run the uninstal utility.Reboot (into normal.)
-Install Avast from the new setup file.
-Reconnect to the net., Get updates.
Good luck.
Another thing to check, especially since the laptop is second hand, is to look in the “add/remove programs” list.
Look for anything “Symantec”, “Norton” or “McAfee”.
There are plenty of other AV’s, which might have been used by a previous user that could still leave remnants behind, but those three are the most likely suspects, by virtue of their popularity - particularly on new equipment. OEM laptops often ship with trial versions of Norton installed. So a “restore to factory settings” (if you did that) would not remove the pre-installed AV.
Let me know how you get on.
Targ57, i thank you…did everything as you advised and… it does not start!
and i found no other AV on my laptop
need help please!
I’ll get you to scan for malware.
Try downloading MBAM (free), available here, install it, update it, and run a quick scan. At the completion of the scan a report will show. Select everything found, and click “remove selected” (this will quarantine it). If MBAM prompts for a reboot to finish removal of some items, please do so immediately.
Please post the scan report.
What service pack of Windows XP do you have installed?
What are the specs (RAM/CPU) of this laptop?
downloaded but could not install it!
“setup
CoCreativeJnstance failed; code 0x8007007e
the specific module could not be found”
???
Are you running as an admin?
And Again, what CPU, RAM, and Service pack number?
Gotta go to bed, now, someone else might well chime in and help.
i am the admin
cpu 1066 hz
ram 248 mb
service pack 3
There’s the answer, I’m afraid. The computer barely has enough RAM to run Windows XP, let alone additional applications.
If you could find a suitable RAM stick of 512MB that is compatible with the computer it will buy it a new lease of life, for a time, though it’s never going to be fast.
There are a few tricks that can be done to decrease the demand on the computer while its running, such as not having any extra programs starting with Windows, and disabling non-essential services. But getting more RAM into it is the only thing that will make a real difference.
What do you use it for?
