I can’t seem to download anything, but I can use the internet just fine.
I just installed avast! today, and I am wondering if I did not set it up right.
I also want to know if Avast! PRO needs a firewall.

avast is only an antivirus, not a firewall. You’ll need a full firewall.

Do you already have a firewall? If so, avast components should be able to connect the internet.
Do you have any other antivirus in this computer?
Yes you need a firewall.
PLease post your operating system and which providers you have running. Normanly avast doesn’t stop you from downloading anything, unless it’s infected of course.
OK.
Computer 1:
xp home
Computer 2:
x64
script blocking
internet mail
IM
Network shield
P2P
standard shield
web shield
The internet works fine on both computers.
File sharing works both ways.
I can use the printer as well.
I cannot download anything on either computer.
Which firewall do you use?
Did you have any other antivirus in the past in this computer?
Which is your operational system?
No firewall on, on either computer.
Computer 1:
Norton internet security
xp home
Computer 2:
Only Avast!
x64
If you stop the avast! providers will the downloads succeed?
No.
Okay. check Tools/internet options, clik the security tab, custom level button, scroll down to download. Is it enabled?
Yes.
Everything is either set to “enable” or “prompt.”
Should I just through my computers away and get new ones?
Maybe a Dell.

Lol, I don’t think, that will be required. ;D
Do you have a router? And the windows firewall is turned off?
Wireless router- yes.
Windows firewall-off.
Downloads- none.

I know this is an odd request but I had a similar problem a while back and found that Ewido could download when nothing else would.

I don’t have a router and don’t know much about them, other than some have a built in firewall. I don’t know if they can be set to prevent downloads or not.
Hang in there. There are a lot of very knowledgable people on this forum. Someone has the answer.
Meantime try mauserme’s suggestion.
Only other thing I can think of is are you using a downloader manager?
Mauserme,
