What’s to stop someone creating a website riddled with viruses & malware from clicking on Webrep & voting it good themselves. And if they did that a 100 times, everyone would be fooled into thinking it was a good, safe site - or am I missing something obvious?
Because WebRep keeps a track of the votes and avoids multiply votes of the same person (IP). Besides, WebRep is not a security tool. To avoid infections, you have Web Shield and Net Shield (and, of course, all other avast shields).
Thanks, that’s a very reassuring answer, especially the bit about avoiding multiple votes
Also, a future plan to include data from the avast! virus labs to that of the current WebRep will also limit this even if they have co-conspirators to vote, it would show infected/malicious sites.
Don’t lose sight of the fact that the webrep isn’t a stand alone product but part of avast. Though it would be possible to find a way of getting it without avast.
While I am absolutely happy with avast! Free in every way, I just don’t get, or like the Web Rep feature. In my opinion, apps like this (WOT), give the user a false sense of security, and I find them useless. That being said, it is awesome that avast! gives its users the flexibility and freedom to install the shields & features that they want and need.
I run avast! without; Web Rep, Gadget, P2P, Mail and IM Shields. Most any other company would force those features down my throat, but avast! seems to really care about the end user and what they want…THANKS avast! TEAM!!!
