hello!
I had installed the home edition and registered me. I get a key and then i wanted to start anti virus… than it says Splash couldn’t create than there is a error called “dbsCreateObject”… what i should to do ??? ???..please help me! its the german version of avast 4 home…

thx sim

Check this and see if it helps: http://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=17530.0

If you encounter this error while starting avast! antivirus:
Error: dbsCreatObject

Or, if you are using the latest version (4.6.691), just right click the avast tray icon, select Program Settings, switch to the Troubleshooting page and check the “Use XML Storage” box.

You may try to open the \data\avast4.ini file and in the [Common] section, change the item Database=ODBC to Database=XML. This could prevent the Microsoft Jet drivers from accessing the database… does it have any (positive) effect?

See an automated option here: http://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=14208.msg120224#msg120224

If you ask which is better ODBC or XML? I’ll say that for the Home version, they are equal.

For the Professional version of avast!, XML is missing some functionality (compared to ODBC), so switching avast! Pro to XML storage is not a good idea: ODBC makes it possible to store the past sessions in the Professional version - which is not possible with XML. Appart from this, Enhanced User Interface behaves strange when switched to XML storage - when a task is started, another instance of it appears in the list (of the tasks, not of the corresponding sessions!). Alwil did not explore the problem deeper yet, so it could be a bug or just something caused by the inability to store additional info in the storage. Right now, XML storage is currently considered just a backup option for avast! Home.

So with Professional version, try to update the Jet drivers (MDAC package) and see if it helps (http://www.microsoft.com/data).

I downloaded the MDAC Utility: Component Checker…
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyId=8F0A8DF6-4A21-4B43-BF53-14332EF092C9&displaylang=en
My version is MDAC 2.8 SP1 on Windows XP SP2.
No Problems were found.

There’s also an MDAC/Jet repair tool…
http://www.macropool.com/en/download/mdac.html#Repair
I ran it too…for the hell of it.

On contrary, to URL blocking (WebShield provider) switch to the XML storage allows a higher limit of characters. The path could have up to 1000 characters.

if Iwant to start Program Settings it doesn’t work…they start nothing… ???

I can’t join programm settings…omg

Tech has already covered that possibility.

You may try to open the \data\avast4.ini file and in the [Common] section, change the item Database=ODBC to Database=XML. This could prevent the Microsoft Jet drivers from accessing the database... does it have any (positive) effect?

Use your text editor (notepad, etc.) of your choice, make a copy of the avast4.ini and save it to another location, before you edit it. There shouldn’t be a problem, but it pays to be careful, you may need to restart avast or reboot to have the changes take effect.

I don’t know…I don’t know what to do… i just want that it work…just install…and work…like a normal programm!

Hi sim,

Since it appears that you do not want to or do not know how to do the above, please try a repair of avast. You must be connected to the internet for this to work.

Start > Settings > Control panel > Add/Remove Programs > Select avast > Change/Remove > scroll down to Repair > click OK and follow directions.

After repair is finished, be sure to do a restart your computer.

I hope this helps you.

I done this 3 times now…it doesn’t work again…i don’t know what to do with XML or what ever…i have repair the programm…have a key…and it doesnt work…that make me angry…

I wish your installation works at the first time, but… unfortunatelly…
Can you more details here about the avast4.ini file and changing XML to OBDC here:
http://forum.avast.com/index.php?board=2;action=display;threadid=1647

Maybe if you uninstall and install again…
Are you using any other antivirus at the same time?
Do you have Microsoft Office installed?

It doesn’t work because the MS Jet Drivers are either out of date or corrupt, that isn’t avast’s fault or within its power to correct. Repair won’t have any effect for things outside of avast’s control.

We have told you you need to do, edit the D:\Program Files\Alwil Software\Avast4\avast4.ini file if you can’t get to the Program Settings because of this fault. Open avast4.ini (it is just a text file) using Notepad and do as we said change Database=ODBC to Database=XML and save the changes.

before I had norton…than I uninstall that… yes I have Microsoft Office… is that important for installing this programm? the important question is…why i can’t click on programm setting… is there a fault…i have the version 4.6.763… and i had reinstalled the programm also 3 times and always restart the pc… there isn’t an avast4.ini file in Program Files… where do I find it? I find two (in Data) an avasta4.mdb and avasta4.ldb file…but i can’t open it…mhm…

OK … I will write it a little different from the way Tech & David did. Perhaps you will understand better.

Open your hard drive. Double click on the Programs folder icon. Double click on the Awil Software folder. Double click on the Avast4 file folder icon. Now double click on the data folder icon. And double click on the avast4.ini file. (if you do not know how to recognize the ini file, it is the icon that looks like a notepad with one gear on it.)

When you double click on this icon, it should automatically open in Notepad. Scroll down to the line that begins with [Common]. You have now found the Common section of the ini file. Now, scroll down until you see this line … Database=ODBC … and use BackSpace key to delete out the C, B, D, and the O. Type in XML with no spaces added. The line should now look like this … Database=XML. Be sure to use capital letters.

At the top of the Notepad window, click on File and then on Save. You can now close all open windows and restart your computer.

I hope this helps you.

THX Charlie0 …now it works…IIIIHHAAAAAAA…why not at the first time? easy…thank you!

You are most welcome, sim. Glad I could help!

Sometimes we forget that there are those who do not understand the “geeky” short way of writing that we sometimes do when posting help because often others either know or figure it out. I said the same thing Tech & David were saying but I did it in the long and detailed manner.

Please come back often, learn more, and maybe help others.

I will!
