Hi all.
I have a problem between the tor.exe (http://www.torproject.org)
and from the avast-virus scanner called ashserv.exe.
When i started my system and i go to the Internet with firefox (avast is started from the autostart).
Next step i klick manually privoxy and vidalia.
After 10-20sek. the cpu goes up to 100% from ashserv.exe and when i killed tor.exe with the taskmanager
or the exit button from vidalia the cpu goes normally.
After 10-20min. later i run vidalia with the tor client and no problems.
But after 1-2 hour later the same problem.
I tried from the vidalia-bundle 01.2.15 to 17 and from the alpha 0.2.0.6 up to 0.2.0.8
I installed the the new version alpha 0.2.0.12 … the same problem.
I deinstalled Avast and i try F-Secure … no problems.
My System:
3300+ Semperon
1Gig Ram
DSL
WinXP-home SP2
all updates from microsoft
Avast 4.7 Home Edition
Sygate Personal Firewall
Firefox 2.0.0.8 with the torbutton 1.0.4.01
Hmmm… did you try to uninstall Sygate and check if avast behaves the same?
Maybe an interaction between antivirus (WebShield) and the firewall is messing the connection.
Does tor work like a proxy?

it’s not a problem with sygate because i have avast and sygate round about 2 years and no problems (all connections from avast to i-net is in the firewall allowed)
And Yes one time i try to deinstalled sygate and i have the same problem…
Yes the Tor is a proxy:
Tor is a network of virtual tunnels.
You can free configurable the outgoing port example: 127.0.0.1:9091
I try to change the ports round about 1 week (from 80- 9091 )
No chance every time the same problem…
I use the same vidalia configuration, and had not the slightest problems with avast. Had problems with ZA firewall , and that is why I switched to Comodo FW 3.0. Try to configure your Tor before you launch it. Or try it in combination with the Tor xb-Browser (formerly known as Torpark), run in combination with a proxy as Privoxy (set the connection port inside xb-Broser for that) and using NoScript and Stealther as extensions give you a acceptable anonymous experience.

I just downloaded regular Tor and I am running it now with the current production version of Firefox. I also installed the recommended Torbutton extension that gives you the ability to toggle Tor on and off. This sets up Privoxy as a proxy in the Firefox connection settings using localhost:8118
Then, in the avast Webshield I added port 8118 to the redirected ports and unchecked the “Ignore local communication” box.
That’s all… but you must now it…

I had the same problem with Vidalia and also just using tor.exe alone. My CPU usage would shoot up to 100% and stay there until I killed tor or Vidalia via the task manager. Alanrf had the right solution in the forums here, and I thought it also may be helpful if I added a little more detail.
To make Tor and Vidalia work correctly, click:
On-access Protection Control>
Web Shield>
Customize>
Enter 8118 in the Redirect HTTP ports [ should look like: 80,8118 ]
and uncheck the box ‘Ignore Local Communication’
For the I2P proxy add port: 4444
For the JonDo aka Jap proxy add port: 40001
[ if all together it should look like: 80,4444,8118,40001 ]
These are the default port numbers for these proxy programs. If you changed the listening ports in the programs themselves, make sure it reflects that when you add them to avast!.
