Problem deleting virus on Fedora Core 5

Hi! I have no problems with the avast program on my Fedora core 5 desktop except that when it finds a virus, it says i cant delete it cause i dont have the permissions, i cant even move it to the chest. I have full permissions as I added my user account to the root, adm groups. Any help would be appreciated! thank you!

Where is it finding a virus?

Virus Name: Nutcracker Family

/usr/share/locale/pa/LC_MESSAGES/redhat-artwork.mo/PartNO_0#860842075

then says under details: An error occured in avast! Engine: Permission Denied

I also cant move it to the Chest, says the same error.

I read in this forum, some guy posted that their is no known viruses for Linux and that any Anti-Virus Engine only scans Windows partitions. This has to be wrong is it not?

Thanks again!

You’re correct. That is, Linux scanners scan mostly for window virus and a few Linux based virus. As for you problem. Linux scanner normally do not support extracting file objects. It’s important to have a second virus scanner as a basis for a second opinion. For example, using F-Prot for Linux workstations. If you need a GUI for F-Prot you can use QTFprot… As for the Avast for Linux installation. Try copying the EICAR test file in the same directory. Run a scan and see if Avast does something with the EICAR file. You can always manually delete the suspicious file at your own risk. Chances are it is a false positive. Running a separate scanner for a second opinion is always advised.
