Problem installing Avast Free

I have an old Acer laptop running XP SP3. It was running an Avast build about one year old. I booted it yesterday after leaving it idle for several months and Avast said licence is expired.

I tried to update the version but it seemed it would only let me upgrade to a paid version. So I uninstall it, downloaded the offline installer and ran it. After reboot, the Avast UI would not would not load. Got a prompt to reload it, did not work.

Since then I have tried using the clean tool, the online and offline installers all with same results. Currently the Avast service is not running and I am unable to start it from services.

Unsure what to try at this point. Avast was working fine until the licence expired.

Thanks for the reply. Did what the article said. Ran the clean tool again, installed Avast. Still no joy. I am really getting tired of messing with this.
I do see 2 instances of AvastUI.exe in the task manager processes tab, but the UI will not load
Avast wont talk to me because I am a free user, correct?

The old version worked fine until the license expired. Does Avast have a page with older installers? Or any other ideas?

You could try this: https://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=223425.msg1484546#msg1484546

If this works be sure to thank both DavidR and alanb, both of whom are avast users like yourself. Save your off-line installers for future use.

Thanks to you both for the replies. Unfortunately, nothing worked. I must have installed / uninstalled Avast a dozen times on this PC.

So I grabbed the current AVG offline installer and it worked fine. I will be keeping the installer as I suppose it may be the last for XP.
