Problem installing Avast

Before I start, I’d like to say there is a chance this issue is nothing to do with avast; last night I sent out hundreds of spam emails to my email contacts and AVG would not install properly either. Thinking something fishy is going on.

When I try to install, I get the ‘Setup SelfExtract’ error message:

An error 87 (00000057) has occurred.
Last performed operation was:
extracting files

Is there any way I an rectify this and does anyone have any suggestions of what could be up with my computer in general?

Thank you

hi izzabellezi,

First of all, without any active real-time antivirus protection, you run the real risk of additional infectious agents coming aboard when you link up to the internet.

Suggest using a second clean computer to get and download programs to begin the cleansing processes, transfer these programs over to the sick one and run them from there. Then take the resulting logs from the sick computer and transfer to the clean one and upload and attach them in your next reply.

Download, transfer, install, run these four programs: AdwCleaner, Malwarebytes, OTL, aswMBR.exe Attach all logs in your next reply, and note any difficulties in running any of these programs at that time. Please allow all of them to complete the scanning processes if possible.

A malware removal specialist will be notified once the logs are posted.

Hi, thank you!

I don’t mean to sound stupid, but could you explain it a little more simply? Do you mean to install the antivirus on a second computer (and extract the files) and then transfer them to my computer before doing a cleanup?

Not a problem. ;D

Assuming the second computer already has an active antivirus program installed, you can safely use that to get the program files listed in the quote above from the page link that was given to you. (Never install two active antivirus programs on the same system at the same time.)

You then would:

  • Copy each program from the good computer to an USB flash drive.
  • Remove the USB drive from the first computer and insert it into the second sick computer.
  • Copy the programs on the USB drive and paste them onto the desktop of the sick computer.
  • Double-click each one one at a time and allow only one program to run at a time.
  • Pay attention (write the file log location down) at the end of scanning so you can find them later.
  • Copy/paste the resulting logs to the USB drive and copy/paste the logs onto the desktop of the clean computer.
  • Begin a new session at avast forums (you only have to CAPTCHA for the first three posts) and attach the logs by clicking the blue link “Attachments and other options”.

Hope this helps you get going. It may help to print out the malware logs page to better assist you in what to expect as essexboy is first-rated here for malware removal help.

I couldn’t get Malwarebytes to run, as it required installing and my computer won’t create new files. But I have the logs for the other 3 programmes. Which thread should I post them in?

Just got your reply just now.

Please attach your logs that you already have here in this thread. I’ve gone and notified a malware expert to assist you.

What to expect:

  • You will do the actual cleansing of your sick machine under the guidance of your very experienced malware removal expert.
  • You will do that by running the proposed cleansing scripts given after the logs needed are attached by you in your next reply.

That is why printing out of the cleansing page is important.
