problem: manual update

When I use the manual update (the vpsupd.exe file) I get the following error codes:

SI: 0x00000005
ST: 0x00000002
LE: 0x00000000

I am using avast! Home Edition, version 4.7.844 Italian, with a valid license that will expire on January 1st 2008. My OS is Windows XP with SP1. Please notice that I have installed avast for the first time about two months ago and I have never had update problems with the vpsupd file before.
I have installed the Comodo Firewall, but this should not be the real problem as it is not loaded when I update avast!.
I have never had any other antivirus software: avast! was installed after formatting the HD. I have already done a search over previous topics, but I wasn’t able to find the error code I get.

Oh, I have already tried to uninstall and reinstall avast! but that didn’t solve the problem.

Basically, check:

  1. If the servers.def file is corrupt or 0KB (C:\Program Files\Alwil Software\Avast4\Setup\servers.def).
    You can try and download the servers.def file, http://files.avast.com/iavs4x/servers.def and replace the one in the avast setup folder.

  2. Did you use the trial period of 2 months or you just use the Home version? Did you enter the Home license key into avast?

  3. If your Comodo settings and allow avast.setup to connect.
    If you’re not sure, just turn off your firewall (to be sure the update failure is not due to it).
    Maybe you should ‘remove’ avast.setup entry, try to update, receiving a new alert from the firewall, allowing it and checking it to remember.

  4. Check your proxy settings into avast!:
    Left click the avast icon > Settings
    Update (Basic) > Details > Proxy
    Make sure your browser is not set to “Work Offline” (this option is generally in the File menu).
    If it doesn’t help, try switching from “Auto-detect” to “No proxy” (I’m assuming you’re not connecting to the Internet via proxy).

Firstly why would you try this manual download vpsupd.exe and update of the VPS file, when you should be able to use the avast auto update function do an incremental update either auto update or manual.

Your version is not the latest, which is 4.7.892 and you might want to read this topic http://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=25348.msg207272#msg207272 as it mentions the forced update of old versions to the latest 4.7.892 with the next VPS update.

I don’t know if there might be something in the vpsupd file that checks you are using the latest version in relation to Vlk’s post in the link above.

Many thanks for your prompt reply. Well, after having checked all your kind recommendations I think that I will upgrade avast! to the very latest version. I hope that will fix the problem.
I use the vpsupd file because I have avast! installed on a machine without internet connection available.

Looking at your error message again, 0x00000005 is a windows error and equals ‘Access is denied.’ and 0x00000002 = 'The system cannot find the file specified, which seems strange.

Are you running this from a limited user account or an account with administrator privileges, I assume use the same as you have done previously. I would have suggested an avast repair but since this system isn’t connected that can’t happen.

Hopefully a reinstall with the latest version will resolve this.

Just a few words to let you know that I have successfully installed the latest version and this time the vpsupd.exe file worked. Hopefully the problem is solved.
