I recently bought a new computer, and I was setting it up based on my old machine. I had my email client Mozilla up and running. I could send and recieve email. Then (a few days ago) I installed avast. Since then I have only been able to send small email messages. 100 chars or so. Larger email messages produce the following error:
“Sending of message failed. The message could not be sent because connecting to SMTP server smtp8.sympatico.ca failed. The server may be unavailable or refusing SMTP connections. …”
I have uninstalled avast, but the problem is still there? Any thoughts on what settings might have been changed? I checked the hosts file and it did not add any entries there. I checked my mail profile settings in Mozilla and they are the same as my old computer (which is still working).
I am also having problems access my service providers online email website with the new computer. And again, with the old one I still can access it.
usually, you fill in the username and the first time you start sending a message, mozilla asks for your password and gives you the opportunity to store it and that should do the trick
The settings are the same as on my old computer. It did not have anything under Outgoing Server (SMTP) Settings - checkbox “User name and password”. I did have the account information under “Account name” for account settings.
Also, I can send messages of about 500 characters or less. I haven’t figured out the exact number.
I did some surfing and found others having my problem with sympatico. It seems that sympatico has been making changes… I had to change my router’s mtu to 1492.
Seems like it was just poor timing with my avast installation! I guess I’ll have to give it another whirl.
Hmmm … other users in this forum have reported sympatico.ca now requires their users to logon using an SSL connection (which, being encrypted, cannot be scanned by Avast without use of STunnel etc.)
problemchild may want to recheck the requirements of the ISP and the reports from other users here.
Actually, they only require it if you are using their secure smtp server. smtp1 and smtp8 are still unencrypted service. They also offer a premium service which may require using their secure smtp servers.
“Sympatico Enhanced Email Service” smtp server is smtphm. People in this forum experiencing this problem might want to try switching to smtp1 or smtp8 and using the non-secure server.
