Problem submmiting email message when a virus is detected

Hello guys!

I have configured all the smtp info to avast submit an email message to me when Avast finds any threat.
When I click in test, it works very well and the message is successfully received.
However, when I test with eicar, the detection is made in my machine, but no email message is sent to my email…

What it could be?

Thanks for your time,

BrBrasil

Hi, BrBrasil,

This was reported during beta testing on three different systems, one each belonging to me, to Logos, and to arsnyder ; see http://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=52661.0 . Vlk, who is on the development team, said “I can’t repro this here. Works as expected (tried for both on-demand scans, and on-access). Does your server require SSL or not? I’m afraid the mail alerts don’t support SSL.”

In my case, at least, the same is true on a non-SSL connection over plain vanilla port 25, but the Avast/ALWIL team made it clear by their subsequent silence there that they just don’t care, even though it has them advertising a feature which doesn’t work on a significant percentage of systems.

My suggestions to you are:

  1. If you are trying to use the email alert system using an SSL-enabled server, or even one using an unusual port, try it with a non-SSL server over port 25. (I’m just guessing that the port might make a difference on some systems.)
  2. On each of my three WinXP Pro SP2 systems, I easily jerry-rigged a good antivirus system based on the free version of Avira - both version 9 and version 10 work fine, a freeware SMTP mailer called Blat, and a scriptable Notepad- replacement which exists in a free version. I don’t like jerry-rigged things, but it’s been working flawlessly on three machines for months. Post here if you need details.

If you’re running the paid version and the email alert function is important to you, maybe you could get your money back, considering the circumstances.

Good luck.
C.

Hi BrBrasil,
I very glad to help you,but i don’t agree with Cassy’s view.Because eicar is not a virus,it only contains some virus signatures,it is used to help people test their antivirus software.I think you can found a virus, and try again! If you failure again, please contact me.My E-mail adress is hzkklook@gmail.com.

;D

@ BrBrasil
I strongly advise you NOT to communicate directly by email with anyone especially with someone making their first post in the forums. No disrespect to Devil, but it would be just crazy to take on trust someone with no forum track record.

Any matter relating to avast should be discussed on the forums any offer of help should be carried out in the forums.

That is my best advice as your email is your business and any answer that resolves your problem is also helpful to others who might have this problem in the future.

Hi DavidR,
I am a student from China,i don’t have enough time to stay at forum. So i tell BrBrasil ,if he failure again, please Contact me by E-mail.I don’t agree with you, because I think that people online may not exist malicious, on the contrary some of them were eager to help others solve the problem.Do you think so?
By the way,my english is too bad, don’t laugh at me.Thanks a lot!

;D

I have no control over your system and should it become infected I would also have no control over any email sent to you being harvested.

Since we have no history of your presence in the forums 1 day, I advise on the side of caution. There are a huge number of people on-line with malicious intent there are spammers galore (even in these forums people register to spam, they are promptly dealt with). I’m not saying this is the case for you, but you have to be somewhat more cautions on-line to protect against all sorts of scams, etc.

Helping one person by email does just that helps one person, helping that person via the open forums may help many others who view this topic in the future.

Your English is fine.

Thank you very much!
