Tonight my husband clicked on the popup to upgrade Avast Pro from version 6 to version 7. All seemed to go well; a bubble popped up saying Welcome to Version 7, look for your Avast icon here (system tray), and then immediately a window appeared that said:
Avast Tray Icon Application Error
The instruction at 0x003a1628 referenced memory at 0x003a1628. The memory could not be written. Click OK to terminate the program.
Clicking OK just leads to the same window reappearing. He tried to repair the install and that didn’t work. I tried to uninstall the program using Control Panel (it’s running Windows 7 Home Premium 32 bit) and it hung. So I downloaded a fresh copy of Avast Pro 7 and the aswclear.exe utility and followed the instructions to run the utility in Safe Mode. I then reinstalled Avast 7 using the freshly downloaded installer, default settings. The install appeared to complete successfully, and then the same Tray Icon error occurred.
I removed Avast 7 again using the utility, and reinstalled Avast Pro 6 (luckily we had a copy of the installer). This installed fine. So his computer is protected for the moment, but I’m not sure how we upgrade his computer to version 7. My computer is also telling me to upgrade Avast (I run Win 7 Home Premium 64 bit, currently running Avast Pro 6) and naturally I am hesitant to do so.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
