I just updated two laptop computers to Avast version 4.5.523, and now have a problem with one of them - I can’t connect to my e-mail client, which is Thunderbird. When I try to get my messages, I get an alert which states: could not connect to server 127.0.0.1, the connection was refused. When I try to send a message, I get a similar message relating to the outgoing SMTP server. I didn’t change any settings, and can’t find the problem. Any help appreciated. I use WIN XP, Home ED as my OS.
I also can’t open the Mail Protection Wizard, which is listed in the Avast Help list. When I follow the instructions, the Wizard isn’t shown. Any suggestions here?..Thanks for any help…Jim
The mail setting is the exact same for both my laptops - one will work on my e-mail system and one won’t. They both worked fine before Avast updated itself this morning. I thought about uninstalling Avast then downloading again and reinstall. Thanks for the suggestion. Maybe someone has another suggestion for me to try before I go through the process of uninstall and install…Jim
This morning, after installing the new 4.5 I’ve got the same problem, due to the fact that avast gracefully REMOVED the changes done by the mail setup wizard in previous version without even asking. The problem was that I also use an antispam that requires settings in the mail accounts and avast messed them up.
This won’t happen on non-NT machines (W98 for instance) because nothing changed there.
I suggest you setup your email accounts as if avast was not there, and you will find out that they work again and avast DOES scan them anyway.
I would like to post a question about this: I’m using a test account of gmali (google mail) and avast does not scan that account. gmail requires the account to be set to port 465 for outgoing mail and 995 for incoming. I suppose this is the reason of the failure. Since I think all manual settings have no longer meaning, how could I solve this problem?

The problem is that according to Gmail instructions:
12. Check the box next to 'This server requires a secure connection (SSL)' under 'Outgoing Mail (SMTP).
They use SSL which is not supported in avast! for POP3 accounts.
SSL is supported when using Outlook. (NOT OE)
I also use Gmail and simply allow the Standard Shield take care of my protection for all my web-based email accounts.
Be sure that the Standard Shield is set to high.
