Now this is very very annoying - I updated to the new Avast today (4.6.731) and now every time I go to download anything from newsgroups with Agent I get this error:
Error reported by Server: 502 concurrent connections limit in avast exceeded.
I’ve gone thru all the settings I can find in Avast to try to change this, but can’t find anything that looks like it. I use 10 concurrent streams in Agent, and I’m not going to settle for less.
Is there a way to fix this? Or do I have to go back to the previous version of Avast?
Oh man, this is bullsh*t. It totally breaks my newsreader. Completely unusable. I have to shut Avast off to read news, which is just the time you need anti-virus protection the most.
Really you should not go back to a previous version since everytime a version comes it fixes bugs and add new things on previous version. I think going back to old version would be a unwise decision. Thats the advice i can give you, maybe it can be fix, but i dont know how.
Remember: Everytime a new version comes out it fixes bugs, add new things (etc) even though it made not work (the latest update) on your computer, there’s always a way to fix it somehow.
Yea, but it fixes the old bugs first thats all that matters. If it just some bugs it does not really matter for some people then when the next version comes out it will fix the bugs. Even if new version have bugs you not should go back at least that what i will do, unless you talking about total destrutive of new version in which you cant use the latest version then its ok and how serious is the new bugs.
But, (the famous but,) one has to consider the quality of the feedback.
Nevertheless, I want to give the fullest credit to futz for the second post.
In these days of instant online gratification … how often do we actually “read the instructions” or even follow them and give the product a second chance before we post to the world that this is a POS that should never have been given space on our hard drive?
I continue amazed at the patience, forbearance and friendliness of the most persitent contributors to this forum and to the members of the avast team who, despite amazing provocation, remain so professional in their responses.
I promised myself, on my first posting here, that I would never become one of those crawling toadies that must be “avast evangelists”.
Dear Lord, mea culpa, I find I have crossed the threshold and I must now implore the powers of avast to reset my classification in this forum to newbie (though not llama please) and let me start over.
I bow to all those wonderful contributors who are “avast evangelist” for their outstanding participation … even though I prefer to avoid that classification.
You can’t go back into avast versions. There is no roll-back feature and this is not avast update policy (the old versions are not official released or kept into the homepage for download).
But you can edit avast4.ini, find the section [MailScanner], add (or edit) the line IgnoreProcess.
Unfortunatelly this is not avast policy. New versions are released as betas, stay two weeks and then are released.
Old ones are removed. If there is a problem with the new version, it should be solved in the newest ones.
Walking ahead and not behind is the policy 8)

Just went to use my newsreader again and Avast choked again. The cure is to disable and re-enable On-Access Protection.
I assume by “On Access Protection” you mean stopping and starting again all of the avast providers. Have you tried to isolate the particular provider that manages to avoid your problem - perhaps the Intemet Mail provider which performs NNTP (newsgroup) scanning?
