Problem with AIS trial

I just downloaded the trial version of Avast! Internet Security. As I was downloading it said I lost connection to internet and some error popped up in the top right corner of my screen. I just continued and it installed to my computer.

But when I opened up AIS it says on the main screen Unsecured. I clicked on Fix Now and nothing is happening. And below that it also says Start Program. I tried clicking that but nothing happened. And I went to Add or Remove programs and I can’t remove it. In Scan Computer > Scan Now there is nothing there.

Because it is a trial, if I remove it will my trial end? I just downloaded it like 10 min ago

Have (or did) you another Anti-Virus/Firewall installed in this system, if so what was it/they and how did you get rid of it/them ?

If you uninstall AIS trial it would be deemed that you ended the trial, installing it again would limit the trial period from 30 days to 6 or 7 (I can’t recall).

I was using Avast! Free Antivirus before I decided to try the trial. I removed the Free Antivirus right before I downloaded the trial. I have Comodo Free Firewall and Malwarebytes. I just use the ‘Add or Remove Programs’ So will I have to remove Comodo?

If the trial is shorten that is fine.

I just don’t know why I can’t remove it.

Yes you would have to uninstall the Comodo Firewall completely.
It could have been a corrupt installation since having Comodo firewall still installed.

After removal of Comodo, reboot and see if the AIS is working ?
If not - Try a repair of avast:
XP - Add Remove programs, select ‘avast! Anti-Virus,’ click the Change/Remove button and scroll down to Repair, click next and follow.

Vista, win7 - Control Panel, Programs & Features, uninstall a program, select ‘avast! Anti-Virus,’ click the Change/Remove button and scroll down to Repair, click next and follow.

You may need to reboot after the repair.

I uninstalled Comodo Firewall and restarted my computer. Tried the Fix Now in AIS and still nothing is happening. And I still can’t remove AIS in Add/Remove programs.

All I want to do is just remove AIS and reinstall it.

Oh and I have Spybot Search and Destroy too.

Aside from S&D being somewhat dated, if you have the teatimer (real-time) function enabled we have seen that cause some issues with avast.

Not being able to uninstall (again presumably you get errors ?) is generally an indication of a corrupt installation.

  • Download the latest version of avast IS, 6.0.1125 http://files.avast.com/iavs5x/setup_ais.exe and save it to your HDD, somewhere you can find it again (if you didn’t save your last download). Use that when you reinstall.

  • Download the avast! Uninstall Utility, aswClear.exe find it here and save it to your HDD (it has uninstall tools for both 5.x and 6.0.x).

    1. Now uninstall avast! using add remove programs, if you can’t do that (as you have found) start from the next step, reboot.- 2. run the avast! Uninstall Utility from safe mode, first for 5.x if previously installed and then for 6.0, once complete reboot into normal mode.- 3. install the latest version, reboot.

I unselected Tea-timer in Spybot and I was able to ‘Change/Remove’ AIS. I selected Update and Repair and I still had a problem with the AIS Fix Now. So I just uninstalled AIS trial and I’m going to reinstall it.

Sounds like that will work. Teatimer can cause a lot of problems, but that’s by design. It “protects” you from registry edits, but prevents legit changes too.

Let us know!

I think the first problem was I lost connection to the internet while downloading the trial. So I think some of the files didn’t transfer over.

I redownloaded AIS trial and followed everything it said like restarting computer etc. and it works now. And it is still active for 29 days

Thanks DavidR and scythe944

Thanks, corrected, you can remove yours now.

Haven’t a clue what was going on there not only messed up but duplicated and that from just a copy and paste boiler plate text, weird.

Very strange I would have thought if it wasn’t complete the download would fail validation and wouldn’t install at all. Main thing is that you are up and running without loss of trial period.

Sure, no problem. Yeah, I would have thought the installer would have prevented the installation in the first place. Oh well, it’s all fixed right?

Come back anytime if you have any more probs!
