Problem with aswrvrt.sys

Hello, I saw this post - http://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=130459.0 - and am hoping essexboy (or anyone else for that matter) can help. I have a friends computer that was very infected. It’s a WinXP (32-bit) computer. I ran Malwarebytes and removed 100+ files, Combofix also found a few files, and TDDSKiller found a rootkit. After doing all this, and running all scans once more with no infected items found, I installed the free version of Avast. The computer worked okay for a couple of hours, but now will not boot to Windows. I can get all the way to where I select her Username, and then I get a BSOD. I should also mention that every time I boot Windows normally it forces me to run a chkdsk. It runs chkdsk through completely and says that it fixed a couple of things, but then BSOD after selecting her Username. I can’t get into any flavor of Safe Mode, Debug Mode, Last Known Good Config, etc. They all stop at the aswrvrt.sys file when loading. I followed the instructions in the post I mentioned above and have attached the FRST.txt file. Any help would be MUCH appreciated! Thanks in advance.

What does the BSOD say ?

It looks like it was the Blackbeard Trojan that was present.

Initially I will remove the remainder to see if that enables a reboot. Could you attach the combofix log please

Download the attached Fixlist.txt to the same location as FRST
Run FRST and press Fix
On completion a log will be generated please post that

Thank you for the quick reply. Combofix log and fixlog are attached.

Details of the BSOD are attached as a jpg. Thanks again.

You forgot the combofix log… OK the errors has several possible reasons ranging from the hard drive to RAM

We will do the drive first
From the reatogo desktop select command prompt
Type in the following command :

chkdsk c: /r

Allow it to complete and try a reboot

Sorry, Combofix log is attached. I’ll run the chkdsk command shortly. Thanks.

The chkdsk c: /r finished. I rebooted the PC and it no longer forces a chkdsk to run, but it still gives the same BSOD. I swapped out the memory and still get the BSOD. I also switched the DIMM slot the memory was in, thinking that maybe the slot itself was bad. Regardless, I still get the BSOD. Do you think it’s time to reinstall XP, or do you have other tricks up your sleeve?

OK got it the rpcss.dll file is infected and windows is not allowing it to run … Hence the blue screen

Download the attached Fixlist.txt to the same location as FRST
Run FRST and press Fix
On completion a log will be generated please post that

New Fixlog.txt is attached after following your latest instructions. Should I reboot again to see if I still receive the BSOD?

Yes please

Windows is finally booting correctly! Thank you! Do I need to be concerned that there’s still something infected on the PC?

I would like to take a proper look now to be sure that all is well
