Problem with Avast and games

Hi,
I am having a strange problem with a couple of games (Serious Sam specifically) and Avast since I did an update yesterday.
With any one of the file system shield, p2p shield or IM shield enabled the game freezes for 3-4 seconds whenever specific effects are shown such as an explosion. I have set the installed game folder as excluded from the file system shield and even reinstalled the game but this has had no effect. The game runs fine with the other shields enabled.
Does anybody have any ideas what else I could try?

What’s your OS? Serious Sam 1 or Serious Sam 2 ?
