Problem with Avast and Outlook express

Hello everyone,

I 'm new to this forum and I post here because a friend of mine has a problem using Avast 4.7 and Outlook Express. After scanning the forums I couldn’t find a direct answer or maybe I overlooked the obvious :).

Anyway as my friend wants to read his e-mails with outlook express he gets a message in outlook that “the reaction of the server was wrong” plus some extra code. I 've read in the FAQ’s that avast sometimes changes the POP and other settings just so Avast can scan incoming messages. I don’t know of this is the case since I 'm not that well accustomed to work with internet and connection settings :(.

If anyone has any information to what might cause this behavior and how we can resolve the problem, they are thanked in advance.

Just some extra information : my friend also has ZA (free version) installed on his PC.

I have never listened about this error ::slight_smile:

Can you friend post a screenshot of the error message?

Welcome to avast forums. Oh, can you please resize your avatar to 100x100 pixels? Thanks

What is your operatimg system?

Avast will make changes in win95,98,98,se,and me. In all others the protection is transparent, avast makes no changes. Info on setting up e-mail protection manually can be found in the help files.

edited for spelling

thanks for the help so far.

I will try to obtain a screenshot from the error and post it.

As for the operating system. It is Win XP home edition service pack 1. I will have to ask him to check the SP1 claim though.

A bit more. What is the mail provider and does the avast mail scanner(internet mail) have access through zone alarm? What happens if you stop the internet mail provider?

Just my 2cents…
E-mail scanning is redundant. The resident scanner will take care of any infections.
Have your friend download a more secure e-mail client like Thunderbird. There are extentions for T-bird so he can get his hotmail or yahoo mail.

max

friends don’t let friends use Outlook Express.

Just my 2 cents - which are just as valuable as anyone else’s … and I’m a long time Thunderbird user.

It is far better to use e-mail scanning and prevent infections making it to your e-mail store than not scanning your email. The avast email scanner is a very effective part of the avast package.

It is even more valuable when using Thunderbird (which is certainly no more secure than any other client) since avast is really not any good at removing viruses from the Thunderbird mail store.

Just my 1 cent ;D

Fully agree 8)
