Problem with "avast! Antivirus" service

Hi,
I use Avast! 4.6 Home Edition with Windows XP Home Edition. The problem is this: there´s a red circle on avast! a-ball icon in system tray. When I click on it, the error message appears saying “the AAVM subsystem detected a RPC error”.
So I go to [My Computer>Manage>SERVICES] and I try to start manually the “avast! Antivirus” service, but an error message appears that saying something about “Error 14001”.I’ve also tried to uninstall the software, reboot, reinstall and reboot, but nothing…

Sorry for my bad english…I’m italian

Is the error code really 14001? Does the error message appear immediately after pressing the Start button, or does it take a little while?

Thanks
Vlk

Yes, the error code is 14001 an it don’t appears immediantely but after a little time…

Try to repair the avast installation.
Control Panel → Add/Remove Programs → avast antivirus → Change/Remove → Repair.

I do it, but nothing…it don’t runs. :frowning:

I think that the problem is related to RPC, because also with another AV the “resident protection” don’t works.

Thanks for you help

That RPC error is often related to having another AV installed or not having been full uninstalled (registry entries, etc.). To avoid conflict with another AV, avast may not fully install.

It isn’t reccommended to have two resident scanners as rather than provide twice the protection it often leads to conflict.

What is the other AV?

The AV that I’ve used was AntiVir, but now it isn’t installed into my pc…

…oh, I’ve also ZoneAlarm installed. It can influence?

Check if AntiVir left trash behind, files in its folder, etc.
Can you check if avast! components are allowed to connect into ZA settings?

So long as AntiVir is no longe installed it should be OK as I haven’t heard of any problems related to anything left behind by antivir after an uninstall.

ZA can have an effect, but s more likely to block internet connection than what you described.

If you have tried the repair that Vlk mentioned (you need to be on-line) and that doesn’t work then, ensure you have the latest version of avast by downloading from the avast.com site and save it on your hard disk. Then uninstall, reboot, install the new download, reboot.

Watch for messages during the install you will get one relating to Zone Alarm compatibility if you are using ZA Pro answer YES if you are using ZA Free answer NO.

No, there aren’t any AntiVir files in my pc.

I’ve repaired avast! when I was online and I’ve just the last version of avast! (4.6.731)

Have you yried the uninstall, reboot, install?

Yes, I wrote it in the first post…

I've also tried to uninstall the software, reboot, reinstall and reboot, but nothing...

There’s also another problem…
Also ashChest.exe don’t runs

Il programma non può usare il client Cestino: (null) --->Descrizione: Il server del cestino virus non è avviato. Comunicazione RPC fallita.

Software can’t use the Chest client: (null)
—>Description: Virus Chest’s server is not started. RPC’s comunication is failed.

Lasek, how are set your avast! services?
Control Panel > Administrative Tools > Services

I suppose you have to have four avast! services:

C:\Program Files\Alwil Software\Avast4\ashServ.exe (avast! antivirus service)
C:\Program Files\Alwil Software\Avast4\ashUpdSv.exe (avast! Update Service)
C:\Program Files\Alwil Software\Avast4\ashWebSv.exe (avast! Web Scanner service)
C:\Program Files\Alwil Software\Avast4\ashMaiSv.exe (avast! e-Mail Scanner service)

The two first of them should be Automatic loaded and the two last Manually loaded.

Yes, there are.
But the 1st don’t run…

And updating to the latest version (4.6.739) probably doesn’t solve the problem, right?

Right…
