problem with avast home edition

i’ve got avast home edition version 4.6.744 i had just recently removed my norton antivirus when i installed avast home edition it said norton was still installed and might affect avast so i installed it anyway i get this message that avast is unable to update, i also get this message that my vps file needs to be updated when i click on the messages that pop up nothing happens when i chose to remove avast from add/remove programs nothing happens so i decided to run the norton removal tool to see if that would fix the problem when i rebooted my computer after i ran the norton removal tool i still get those messages and when i click on them nothing happens and when i go to add/remove programs and click change/remove nothing happens i downloaded the vpsupd.exe file from the website when i open it i get this error message

Start by looking at this, which is a program removal tool, which can remove the remnants of a number of different Norton Programs:
Removing your Norton program using SymNRT

Download and Run the above tool then reboot.
I then suggest you uninstall avast, reboot, and install afresh (see below) to ensure any component not installed properly is installed correctly, reboot and try a manual update.

It would probably be best to download the latest version of avast, now 4.6.763 and save it to your HDD, somewhere you can find it again. Use that when you reinstall.

i just ran the norton removal tool and rebooted when i try uninstalling avast using add/remove programs nothing happens

If Control Panel fails, use Avast Uninstall for complete uninstallation (read http://www.avast.com/eng/avast_uninstall_util.html) 8)
