I keep receiving an error on some of the computers that I have installed Avast 5 on. I use ghost to set up the computers so all of them are set up the same but only some of them get the error. I have checked the updates also and they are also the same.
The error is
The add-in “C:\Program Files\Alwil Software\Avast4\ashOutXt.dll” could not be installed or loaded. This problem may be resolved by using Detect and Repair on the Help menu.
I am no longer running Avast 4 on these machines. Does this mean that not all of the references were removed and if so how do I get rid of them?
Check your MS Outlook plug-ins and see if you have two listed for avast in there, either active or disabled.
Ok that worked for getting rid of the error, thanks, but now I need to get avast 5 to show, guess I need to reinstall.
You’re welcome.
Do you mean show in MS Outlook ?
If so just try a reboot and see if that resolves it.
If not - Try a repair of avast. Add Remove programs, select ‘avast! Anti-Virus,’ click the Change/Remove button and scroll down to Repair, click next and follow.
If still no joy, since you appear to have had remnants of 4.8 that I would have expected to have been removed, a clean reinstall is probably best:
Download the latest version of avast, 5.0.462 http://www.avast.com/free-antivirus-download and save it to your HDD (if you didn’t save it already), somewhere you can find it again. Use that when you reinstall.
Download the avast! Uninstall Utility, find it here ensure you get the version5 one (it has uninstall tools for both 4.8 and 5.0), aswClear5.exe and save it to your HDD.

- Now uninstall (using add remove programs, if you can’t do that start from the next step), reboot.- 2. run the avast! Uninstall Utility from safe mode, first for 4.8 if previously installed and then for 5.0, once complete reboot into normal mode.- 3. install the latest version, reboot.
