Problem With Avast

So today I turned on my old windows xp desktop as my laptop is in for repairs. The old pc needed a lot of work. Had to uninstall a heap of unwanted programs, run a disk clean up and defragment. Once I did all this I noticed that avast hadn’t updated since I turned it on. So I went in to the program and found its running version 6.0.1426 and wouldn’t update. It was stuck on initializing…

So I downloaded a new version of the program and when trying to install I got this error everytime I tried.

I then thought okay maybe its got something to do with the older version being installed.
I went into Add or Remove Programs tried to uninstall it and this error popped up.

Not sure what to do now… Any ideas?

  • Which Avast…? (Free/Pro/IS/Premier)
  • XP… (32/64 Bit…? - which SP…?)
  • Other security related software installed…?
  • Which AV(s) did you use before Avast…?
  • Which Avast…? (Free/Pro/IS/Premier) Was a Internet Security Free Trial that expired last year, it wont revert back to the free version
  • XP… (32/64 Bit…? - which SP…?) I think its 32? Service Pack 3
  • Other security related software installed…? Malwarebytes, its also going spastic and avg did aswell when I tried it earlier today.
  • Which AV(s) did you use before Avast…? Pretty sure it was avg, not sure though

First, be sure to get rid of all remnants of your prior installed AV(s)…!!

Then:

  1. Download Avast Free Antivirus: http://files.avast.com/iavs9x/avast_free_antivirus_setup.exe
  2. Follow instructions: http://www.avast.com/uninstall-utility (Run this tool for all prior installed Avast versions…!!)
  3. Reinstall Avast with the downloaded installer from point 1.
  4. Reboot.

I’ll give that a shot thanks mate

NP, report back.
