Problem with context menu scan

For over 6 months now I have been unable to do scans via the context menu on Windows 7 PC.
I am running avast 2014.9.0.2018 free antivirus.

When I right click to bring up the context menu on Windows 7 and then select the folder/file I want to scan avast brings up a blank window saying “avast! scan” and then a second window on the bottom right of the screen saying ??? / Running with a progress bar.
The problem is that the scan never completes via the context menu. I can leave the scan running for over an hour and it will still only show a couple of percent completed.
If however I open the avast UI and go to the scan menu and then “Select a folder to scan” the scan on the same folder completes in seconds.

I have tried updating avast to the latest version and also going to the Windows control panel - selecting Uninstall a program then selecting avast and REPAIR and the problem persists.

Thanks for your help!

  • OS…?? (32/64 Bit…? - which SP…?)
  • Other security related software installed…??
  • Which AV(s) did you use before avast!..??

Windows 7 Home Premium 64bit SP1

The only other security related software that is installed is Panda USB Vaccine 1.0.1.4

No other AV have previously been installed on this machine as far as I am aware…

I have enclosed as a text file attachment a list of running processes

Before we continue update to SP2…!!

Edit: In your initial post you were talking about W7…?? ???

Apologies - Windows 7 is running on this machine. According to this SP1 is the latest service pack available for Windows 7 Home Premium

That’s right, but you were talking about XP in your last reply.

  1. Download avast! Free Antivirus: http://files.avast.com/iavs9x/avast_free_antivirus_setup.exe
  2. Follow instructions: http://www.avast.com/uninstall-utility (Run this tool for all prior installed avast! versions…!!)
  3. Reinstall avast! with the downloaded installer from point 1.
  4. Reboot.

That has fixed the problem. Many thanks!

You’re welcome.
