Hey folks,
I have encoutered problems with the mail protection feature of Avast after the update. Thunderbird would just load the metadata, but not the actual messages. After a few seconds there popped up an infobox, which told me that the connection with the server was interrupted. This happened just after the update of Avast Free Antivirus to version 17.5.2302. And the problem is not just with Thunderbird, but also with the Windows Mail Program. So it’s not Thunderbird, it’s definitly Avast. When I uncheck the SSL-Search box in Avast, Thunderbird (and also the Windows Mail Client) are working flawlessly.
Today there was a new thing, Thunderbird was asking for security exceptions for all of my email accounts. As they were issued by Avast and for my various mail programs, it was clear that it would be a solution to just accept them. It worked for Fastmail and Yahoo, but it didn’t for Posteo. I accepted like 50 times, but there was always a popup that told me, that the IMAP Server from Posteo does not support the authentification method and that I had to choose a different one. So, I’ve tried all the possible authentification methods in the server settings of my Posteo account in Thunderbird, but to no avail.
So what can I do? As a Free Antivirus customer I can’t contact Avast. I also can’t use the Windows Recovery cause I don’t have a suitable restore point. There are older versions of Avast for download on some sites, but I don’t want to take the risk for a virus. As I’ve already mentioned, I can’t go the way with the security exceptions in Thunderbird, cause Posteo would not accept it. It’s also no use to export the certificate from Avast and import it in Thunderbird cause then Thunderbird tells me, that this certificate is already there.
So, the best solution I’ve found so far is to untick the SSL-Search in Avast and live without the mail protection. But I don’t really want to miss it.
Any ideas beside waiting? And do you have similar problems?
Thanks a lot for your help!
