Avast Online Security was installed with the last update a couple of weeks back and ever since I’ve had problems with Windows closing web pages while I’m browsing. This happens even on sites that are deemed safe. It’s happened too many times for this to be a coincidence. Anyone got any ideas what the problem is? I’m using the Avast free version along with the paid for Avast Cleanup.
Specific examples would be helpful.
There is nothing specific about it, it happens periodically on almost every site I visit including this one.
What makes you think ists that it’s related to Online Security ???
I have no problems on my systems and all of them are using AOS.
What are your settings ???
Because it’s only been happening since the AOS icon has been visible at the top of the screen next to the homepage button. I don’t know when this first appeared, I can only assume it came as part of the latest update.
AO has been in use for a long time , again, what are your settings. ??
My settings are all default, I haven’t changed anything since it was installed. I installed an Avast update yesterday and that stopped IE working completely, every time I clicked to open it I got an Application Failed message. Ended up doing a restore to a point before the update and now IE is working again but it’s still closing down several times a day.
This has been fixed already via VPS update.
I’m using Windows7 64bit. What is VPS?
Fixed yesterday, so latest VPS should work/help.
Latest Virus Defenition Update
That was the update that I downloaded yesterday which stopped IE working completely, I had to do a restore to get it working again. I’ve been using Avast Free AV for years on several different pcs in the past and never had a problem before this, I’m thinking of doing a complete removal and reinstall. I know it shouldn’t be necessary but is that likely to resolve the issue? I don’t want to lose my Avast Cleanup in the process as I find it very useful.
Yes.
Clean Install of Avast:

Well that was a trouble free uninstall and reinstall, thanks for the link and thanks everyone for the help. I decided not to enable AOS as I’m certain that was the root of the problem. Will let you know how it goes.
OK, sounds good.
You’re welcome.
