I have the following problem on my XP Pro (SP3 and all patches) machine: I started the update from verion 6 via the UI. Everything went fine, then I rebooted the machine as requested. After the reboot avast showed me a splash screen, I answered all the questions and closed the screen.
Then my PC froze. I could move the mouse, but couldn’t open programs or close the ones that were running. Shutting down was impossible too. So I powercycled the machine. When trying to log on afterwards the PC said “Loading user settings” and that was all. I let the PC sit for twenty minutes, to no avail.
So I powercycled it again and booted my Ubuntu. From there I renamed the directory is installed in (%programfiles%\alwil software\avast5) to keep avast from starting. Bad idea: when trying to boot Windows it restarted before even reaching the logon screen. So I changed the name of the directory back and renamed the AvastSvc.exe.
Success. I can logon to Windows again. I downloaded the install package from your website and tried the update button. After rebooting the old problem was back. Sure enough there was a file AvastSvc.exe again, which I renamed and I can log on again.
I never experienced any problems with upgrading before. Do you have an idea what’s going on?
Greetings
General Failure
P.S.: I have a Zone Alarm running on the machine. Never had any trouble.
P.P.S.: I’m using the free version.
I propose the Zone Alarm disabled or uninstall and then install new avast! 7. If problems still exist, you wait please to publish new (corrected) version of avast! 7.
I disabled the firewall and re-installed the software. No success.
Repair option with firewall disabled: no success.
Next step: uninstall avast via the control panel and try a complete fresh install.
If that won’t help: how long will I have to wait for a updated version of avast? Somehow I get the feeling that this version could have used more beta testing before releasing.

P.S.: What stats are you collecting during the setup? Found this line in the setup log:
02.03.201209:10:43 internet:Sending stats ‘http://stats7.avast.com/cgi-bin/iavs4stats.cgi’: 00000000 204
You can find the updated R2 7.0.1412 here, i would also suggest you to download the avast removal tool http://files.avast.com/files/eng/aswclear.exe and use it in safe mode after a normal uninstall, you should run the tool for all versions of avast 4,5,6,7 you have ever used from the drop down list, reboot back into normal mode when completed and install the new avast.
Note that ZA has given issues with avast in the past.
