Problems connecting to other devices avast internet security

I previously had norton internet security and it expired so i decided to get avast internet security a try but i have been having problems connecting to other computers/devices for example i am trying to access my mail box on my scanner but it always says it cant find the device and additionally when i try to access a quickbooks database file from another computer it only works if i disable the firewall

any help would be appreciated

did you run the Norton removal tool ? run it and reboot

you find it here as Nr #25a http://thewebatom.net/uninstallers/security-software/

did it work ?

no it did not but thanks, any more ideas?

Hi,

avast! IS is a silent firewall, that means if you use a custom/not very common application to access your scanner, maybe there is a blocking rule for that. You can check both “Application Rules” for automatically created rules for this application and “Network Connections” for current activity, so see if something gets blocked during your search for the device.

ok i was able to fix the quickbooks but the scanner still doesnt work, looked at application rules and the program has all the ports open and permitted and network doesnt show any blocked connections, when i attempt to access my mailbox on the scanner, its shows the scanners ip address on Network Connections in green but still doesnt connect

Hi,

do you know which protocol it uses? Does it work like a network share? There are some application protocols for network related stuff for example which can be configured in the advanced settings of the firewall module, but first we would have to find out, how the software or your computer is accessing files on the scanner. Another possible solution would be to have the scanner connect to a network share or mail the files to you.

sorry, dont know what protocol it uses and it works kind of like a network share, for example i scan plans on to it and choose under which mailbox i want it to save it and than access it through which computer i associated the mailbox to. It doesnt email the files i scan.

this is what i got

Hi,

in case of network shares, it may help to go to the avast! user interface → Firewall → Expert settings → Policies → Packet rules and enable the checkbox at “Windows Networking” in and out. Maybe someone can correct me, if I have the wrong idea.

I just found out something interesting and weird, i tried disabling the windows firewall and by doing that it allows me to connect to it, isnt the avast firewall suppose to replace the windows firewall? or is it just another layer to the windows firewall?

Hi,

avast! Internet Security is basically a replacement for the Windows Firewall, which means you can also disable the Windows Firewall, when using the avast! Firewall. However in most cases it is no problem to have both enabled, since both technologies use different APIs for protecting your network.
I guess the tool you have installed, forgot to set the corresponding rules in the Windows Firewall set and therefore disabling it helped. You can leave it disabled now, since you are protected by the AIS.
