Problems installing Avast

HI all :slight_smile:

I’m trying to install the Avast free edition on my friends Win98 PC. These are the various error messages appearing:

setup selfextract an error has occured 1006 (000003EE) has occured.

I have tried d/l from download.com’s site and various others, I’ve used one that is on a USB key that installed fine on my PC, but each time it says there’s an error with the packet and it won’t install - has anyone else had this prob?

The program was installed previously but they kept on disconnected from the internet before the program could update and it stopped working, so once they were on broadband I uninstalled and now I’m trying to reinstall it again without any luck! Why would a new d/l of Avast be broken?

…when my pals from this forum asked him for more details so we can try to help him, he never came back.

Are you sure your frined have compression software installed on his computer ? I am not quite sure, but maybe it has something to do with that issue… It’s not so often that we see problems like this… Maybe guys from Alwil knows something more.

Right I’ve just read that other link you gave me and what I’ll do is go back to her PC and find out the answers to each in turn.

I went around there today as her IE is causing invalid page faults, I installed Avant browser and still getting errors. Her poor PC is old and is coming up with numerous dll errors, I’ve left her to think about getting a new PC but in the meantime I’d still like to get some anti virus on there.

I couldn’t even connect to Windows Update to check for patches!

Anyway, I’ll try and get there this week and give you guys some more info - thank you for the quickl response :slight_smile:

Also, not sure if there is compression software on the PC - how would I check? I did have Avast running on the computer at one stage but she fecked it up so I had to uninstall it and that’s why I’m trying to put it back on.

Hi Lee,

Well, it’s quite easy to check if she has some compression/decompression software installed… just look for WinZip or WinRAR or something similar. Actually, what you could try, is to download some zipped (compressed) file from somewhere, or even better you can take some zipped file on floppy and check if you are able to open it on her system. Second option is much better since she has no antivirus protection on her system at this point, so downloading something from internet is not quite good idea when I think twice…

Regarding all those errors she has on her computer, maybe best thing to do is to completely reinstall OS (Win98) over existing installation. She won’t lose any programs or settings, and there is slight possibility that repairing will repair some damaged system files or add some of those that are maybe missing. Of course, best possible solution is to completely flush the system, reformat partition and reinstall everything from the scratch. Of course, performing backup of her important files and/or documents prior reinstalling OS is essential… It’s a lot of work, but at least, everything will work as new… of course, if there is no defective hardware in her system.

Yes, updating her OS from Microsoft web site is higly recommended… download all those necessary patches and security updates, but since you are unable to do that from her system, you have to do some other checkings first…

Download HijackThis on your system, save it on floopy and bring it over to her system. Check her system with that wonderful application and make a log file (it’s unbelievable easy, don’t worry, just read on screen instructions). After you create log file, you can post it in here, and some of us will take a closer look at it…

Then, if you manage somehow to start Housecall online scanner on her computer, you can go to Trend Micro’s Housecall, online antivirus scanner (one of the best):

Choose your country of residence, click OK, and then most likely you’ll have to wait few minutes to download latest definitions… after process is done, choose what partitions/directories/drives to be scanned, and start to scan.

Also, her system should (MUST) be checked for spyware and adware… some of the best programs you can use are Spybot - Search and Destroy, Ad-Aware by Lavasoft, SpywareBlaster (for preventing, it’s always better to prevent than to heal)…

Be sure to empty your Windows temporary folder (C:\Windows\Temp) and your local one (C:\Documents and Settings\ … \Local Configuration\Temp).

To delete the temporary Internet files, go to Internet explorer >Tools > Internet options > Delete files > Click delete all offline content (just to be sure) > click ok.
It might take some time to delete them.

P4 3.0 HT

windows xp sp2

Seems weird but works for me:

In windows security center → antivirus

Check the box - I have an antivirus program that I’ll monitor myself bla bla bla…

and try to install.

Why should you do that? Avast is recognized by the security center as a valid AV program.
The only one that doesn’t recognize it is ZA, :stuck_out_tongue:
