Instead of removing version 4.8 of AVAST he installed version 5 he on top of version 4.8. When he rebooted the computer, he got the BSOD.
A problem has been detected and Windows has been shut down to prevent damage to your computer. If this is the first time you had this stop error screen, restart your computer. If this screen appears again follow these steps:
Disable or install any anti-virus, disk fragmentation or backup utility. Check your hard drive configuration, and check for any updated drivers. Run CHKDSK /f to check for hard drive corruption, and then restart your computer.
Is this related to your other thread that is still open http://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=65999.msg557602#msg557602 that I’m waiting for you to respond to? If so, please go back to your original thread (the one I posted in my post here), and we’ll pick up there…you shouldn’t post in 2 different areas.
I was the one that told you to uninstall/reinstall because the Avast Repair did not fix your problem in the other thread. Did you have questions about the instructions or did someone else do this?
Had you already saved the Avast Uninstall Utility Tool and Avast Free 5.0 to your HDD?
When you turn your machine on, can you try tapping the F8 key repeatedly to get to Safe Mode? If not, try F10 for last good configuration.
We need to get you into Safe Mode so we can uninstall BOTH Avast 4.0 and 5.0.
My questions are for two different computers with different problems. This computer (XP SP3)I would almost consider dead. When I start-up the computer I am given the BSOD. When I start-up the computer attempting to bring the computer up in SAFE MODE I am given the BSOD. Of course there is no back-up to my knowledge.
So is this machine and thread now a dead issue or do you want to continue? Have you tried to get into last configuration? Can you get into any kind of Safe Mode?
Yes please I would like to continue. I’ve always had a problem installing a new version of the AVAST. There has always been a work around that had to be used on that XP SP3 machine!
I can forget that fix since version 4.8 was overlaid-ed by version 5.0.
My current gold is to find a way to get into that box and find a way to install version 5.0 of AVAST properly.
If you can get into Safe Mode by F8 or F10, can you get back to your last good configuration? Do you remember prior to doing this, were you at a good state (configuration - able to use your machine normally) at this time?
[Off Topic] I just sleep at odd hours. Someone has to be here on the forum at this hour and I don’t mind.
I see that you now have more than 20 posts so please go to PROFILE then Modify Profile then Forum Profile Information then select your country in Please select your country: then update your Signature: with information like my signature as this helps the helpers offer pertinent advice.
I can’t enter safe mode (using either F8). I get the BSOD. Before the client caused this problem he didn’t he have a problem booting up or using the system for that matter.

looks like bios defense is enable. if you can reset your bios set-up into default it will enable you to start in safe mode. but the date and time of your computer is change also.
Now that you have over 20 posts, you no longer need to type in your system information in each post.
Please go to PROFILE on the top of the main forum page > Modify Profile > Forum Profile Information > Signature. Enter information about your system like the Operating System (OS), RAM, browser, security software, what version and product of Avast and firewall you use and other items you wish to mention. See my signature or others as an example. The purpose of this is so that we and Avast can offer pertinent advice. Thank you.
Between backups I will take a look at the BIOS. I am willing to return the settings to default once I have copied the important values that make up the current BIOS’s profile. For all I know he may already be using the default values…
if you are using desktop. disable the option boot in diskette.(A) this is the reason that you don’t have enough memory in start-up because sometime instead to boot on HDD it directed to Diskette Drive
