I’m a longtime user of avast! and I recently got a new computer with Windows Vista. Downloaded and tried to install avast! home Edition, but had an error partway through the installation. Something about the registry. I don’t believe the installation actually finished.
Is avast! compatible with Vista? If so, is there a workaround?
Please let me know what needs to be done – I’m without virus protection at the moment.
I am using Vista Home Premium, and I have no problems using Avast! Was there any other Antivirus like Norton previously installed on your machine? Mine came preinstalled with Norton…nasty little program that ;)…if that is the case you have to download the removal tool supplied by Symantec and get rid of all the remnants left behind. Do you recall what the error message said? Did you try to install using administrative rights…with Vista you have to take UAC into account…a pain…but that’s Vista… : What were the steps you have taken to resolve the install problems? Let us know there are alot of knowledgable people here who will be able to help you get your Avast up and running I’m sure; and the answer to your question…yes…Avast! is absolutely compatible with Vista

UAC stands for User Account Control…and Vista takes it seriously…so seriously, that some users have disabled it. You have to right click the program and click “Run as Administrator” An extra step that so many forget to do. Probably because it’s stupid : but who am I to say ;D I would start with that removal tool from Symantec; then download the removal tool for Avast! and the newest version 4.81201 of Avast and save it to your desktop…get off the internet…run the Symantec tool to make sure all is clean…reboot…remove Avast! from Control Panel…reboot…run Avast removal tool…reboot… then install fresh Avast! program.
Hope all goes well

Just popping in, new user here, but I have alot of success with Revo Uninstaller.
Free to use, and does a very clean removal.
You may still have to reboot, but you should only need to do that once.
If the program does NOT show in revo, then you will have to do it as suggested above.
I am now going to remove AVG7.5 from my wifes laptop…(Vista)…and try to install Avast.
Wish me luck
Well, I am 2 for 2.
Avg was a pain, (or at least it tried to be), to uninstall, Had I not been using Revo, it would
not have gone well. Revo was able to stop all the processes, and even flag all the files needed to delete on reboot.
After that, Avast set up was a snap. I am sorry that I have nothing to report on, but I did 2 installations, one was on
a “Frankenstein” system running XP sp2, (I built this one), and the other went on the wife’s laptop running Vista Home.
Believe me I gave it plenty of opportunities to screw up, but both installs went without a hitch.
Then, just to give it one more chance to screw up, I went over to a friends and installed it on his machine, a real P.O.S from HP running XP. It installed with out any trouble.
