Problems moving from Avast 4.8 free to Avast 5 free

I got a notice that my Avast 4.8 free registration was running out. So I clicked to register and ended downloading and installing Avast 5 free in my XP SP3 system. Avast 5 installed in its own folder, separate from Avast 4.

Now everything is a mess. Despite rebooting and doing everything I was instructed to do there seems to be a conflict.
a) Windows XP tells me that Avast 4.8 is turned off. I tried turning it back on and it would not.
b) same thing with Avast 5. I clicked on its new red desktop icon but nothing happened. Obviously i have a faulty install.

I therefore uninstalled both Avast 4 and Avast 5 and rebooted. Still no go. I deleted all I could of the Avast 4 and 5 folders (some files would not delete).

I used regedit to get rid of any mention of Avast in the registry.

Reboot, still no go. I get the same (a) and (b) error messages. Yes I checked and Ctrl-Alt-Del does not show Avast as running and I do not see its service running (that I can tell).

How do I clean my XP system of Avast so I can cleanly install Avast 5 free?

Help!!

Thanks.

Or

Do a system restore

Uninstall utility http://www.avast.com/uninstall-utility

Thanks. Will try.

I never planned to run the 2 versions together. The re-register link took me to the new Avast and I just followed instructions.

Thanks.

Thanks for the help. The removal utility did the trick.
