my avast updates seem to be coming through ok, got one just now, but yesterday I ran a full scan, normally 30 minutes. After over two hours I paused it and it seemed to think the ‘scan’ had finished, which it hadn’t. Also my laptop is taking 10-20 minutes to start up and some of my security is sometimes switched off. I suspect something is slowing down things dramatically (though fine online) but have no idea what:
But I have found this:
Error: System 1528 AAVM scanning warning: x_AavmCheckFileDirect…
Hopefully this means more to someone than it does to me! Any help appreciated! I may not be able to log in later today, so not ignoring you if you kindly reply, thanks in advance.
Also I have lost the ‘connect to a network’ icon from the bottom of my screen so have to do it through security centre. I have Vista Ultimate.
My latest update was;

How exactly does it freeze? Does it happen always approximatelly at the same place/folder of the scan? Do you see a hard disk activity (when it freezes)? Is only the program frozen, or the whole computer (possibly with mouse cursor)?
Additionally, you can go to the program settings and turn on the creation of the report file (with “OK files” to be included as well in the report). This way, you can find out where the scan really stopped (it’s going to be close to the end of the report).
After avast! disappears, check the end of the report file - the “troublesome” file is likely to be close to the end (close in the sense that this particular file will probably not be written in the report, but the previous one will be the last line, so it shouldn’t be hard to guess). We would certainly like to have this file - if it really causes problems to avast! - so that we could fix the problem.
The report file created (if you turned it on in program settings) will be (default location) at \Data\Report\Simple User Interface.txt
I think this is not ‘slowing down’ but an infection behavior…
Is your computer clean?
Hi David, thanks for suggestions. It doesn’t actually freeze, but is taking several hours to run a standard scan. Yesterday I managed one to complete, without archive files, that took an hour and a half, as opposed to the usual 15 minutes or so.
I’ll run it again, though am on hol at the moment, when I get home, and give you more info, especially regarding the report you mention. Thanks for your time again.
My computer seems to be clean and works fine online (when I get there!) but can’t be 100% sure.
As promised an update. Since getting home I ran a full scan including archive and it took under 40 minutes. I don’t know what the problem was, but although start up is a little slower than normal, I seem to be otherwise fine.
