Since installing Avast, my Thunderbird is extremely slow sending emails, and sometimes fails to send them altogether.
I have been using an email with an attached file of 800mB to test this.
With Avast connected, it takes 6 minutes or more for the email to be sent, and sometimes it does not go at all.
I disconnected Avast, installed Microsoft Security Essentials, and the email went in 50 seconds.
I sent the same file from the web server, and it went in 20 seconds
I sent it using Windows Live with Avast connected (MSE disconnected) and it went in 50 seconds.
So clearly, there is a clash between Avast and Thunderbird.
Any suggestions as to how this can be rectified welcome.

There is a known problem between Thunderbird 31 and avast.
For now, use a older version of Thunderbird and wait till the developers have solved it.
