problems with auto-updates v731 (0xC0000005)

Glad to know… Not all the things could be solved… tonight it’s not being an easy night. Glad it worked.
If you can, try to come back and help the others 8)

In response to the post from mystere, I just disabled the Windows Internet Connection Sharing and Firewall service and restarted my system. The automatic check at startup and a manual update attempt still work just fine and the status of the
Windows Internet Connection Sharing and Firewall service has not been changed.

It may well be a configuration issue, but it is not simply the status of that service I think.

I believe that the Internet Connection issue may be a red herring. I had recently re-installed windows completely and it looks like XP SP2 is now detecting my hardware firewall on the network and providing a nice configuration utility called Internet Connection. This wasn’t happening before because I had UPnP disabled.

So scratch that part of my message. I’ve reinstalled AVS several times now, even re-installed the OS 3 times now. Each time I update to 731, i get the same problem with Avast no longer able to update, and with the setiface error in my log. 691 works perfectly on a clean machine. There is definately something new in 731 that is breaking on my machine.

mystere,

it is clear from the reports here that you and a number of other users are finding this problem that is removed by reverting to release 691.

Unfortunately, it was not a problem that I can recall being experienced (or at least reported) by any of us who went through the beta testing of this release.

While that does not make it any less real for the folks suffering the inconvenience, I suspect we will have to wait for further diagnosis by the avast development team.

Well let’s hope it’s soon. I have read this thread with great interest and all that it said applies to me too. I also have all the remedies suggested with no lasting success. I am positive it is in the new version. Another peculiarity (in my case anyway) is that if I change the updates from automatic to either of the other options then that change is not saved. On closing the options screen it immediately reverts to automatic.

Jim,

are you sure that, when you changed the update options, you clicked on the “OK” box afterwards? It can sometimes be too easy just to click on the “x” box in the top right corner which would discard the changes you selected.

If you are clicking the “OK” box then you are certainly getting a different result from me.

Hi,
if you get error 0xC0000005, check running processes in Task Manager. If avast.setup process is already running, end this process and try update again. If it doesn’t help, send files setup.ini and setup.log to my email address. Also send some details about your internet connection - dial-up/adsl/cable, proxy, firewall.

Error 0x00000002 (tgignac) means “file not found”. In avast4/setup folder check if it contains file setup.ovr. Or send setup.log to my email too.

I hope my experience with v731 helps to clarify the problem.

I have Sygate Personal Firewall Pro 5.5_2525. Since v731 when avast tries to update my firewall wrongly detects an possible application hijacking in Avast because the update module is being called by another application - ashserv.exe (also avast). My firewall says something about an “unknown application using an allowed application to access the internet”. Even if I agree to allow that and to remember my choice my firewall would gae the same message again and again. The only way to allow avast to update (and to be able to use the computer, which was nearly impossible with the firewall giving pop-ups) was disabling the firewall during the update process.

I hope this gives somes clues about what is happening.

Yes, I click the OK box and I have tried disabling absolutely EVERYTHING to see if there is a conflict.
Jim.

i try to update manully but it fails
i got this message

Can’t install VPS update. Please, report following errorcodes:

Hello,

i have the same problem as the other users. I get no error messages when I update manualy, but only in the “AVAST-Setup”-window i see the update like to download some files. But after 2 seconds in the window is only written the time to download.
If i do it by automaticly, i get an small red error-message from avast.
I do not use an software-firewall but a hardware-firwall in my router, so my question is: Does avast use for the updates an specialy port and i have to open it ?

Thanks for your answers

ReinhardW

Now I am getting “Not enough user rights to continue” which is the problem I had on my laptop a week or so ago - no one could give me an answer then what the problem was. Eventually I sorted it myself - I uninstalled Avast and had to reinstall it in safe mode. It’s been working OK since then - but I think that was before this last update so I’m not sure what the situation is there now and don’t have time to find out at the moment. I’m afraid I’ve lost confidence in it all together now. I just don’t know if I’m protected or not after spending MANY hours on the forum and on the laptop and now on the PC.

What are you doing when you’ve received this message?
Do you do not have rights to do what?
Do you have more than one account with administrator rights?

Tech, much as I appreciate your help I have covered all this in another thread on this forum which went on for days when I had the same problem on my laptop. The bottom line was that someone here said that I definitely had NOT installed Avast from an administrator account - even though I only have the one account which is an Administrator - and nothing got sorted. The problem is (or was on the laptop) that Avast cannot create a registry entry. I resolved the problem by reinstalling whilst in safe mode. That seems to have sort of made things work. Occasionally (still talking laptop) Avast will ask me for a registration key and there are other various problems which come and go but (so far) it is updating OK on the laptop. Or was until yesterday anyway. Now the problems on the desktop have started in EXACTLY the same way as they did on the laptop so I am assuming the problem is the same and I am going to have the same result. The updating error is new I must admit but all the problems are so convoluted that it is difficult to point to one particular thing. I am not a techy but it seems to me that this problem must have something to do with Avast itself and not my systems - especially as others have similar things happening. I don’t know whether to unistall Avast and try to reinstall or not. This is all very interesting but is taking a lot of time and I still don’t know if I am protected or not while this is happening. I would bite the bullet and buy something but the last time I did that (Kaspersky) they let me down badly - which is why I ended up with Avast. Anyway, enough ranting, I will watch this space and hope.

There are a lot of way to test your protection.
http://www.eicar.org/anti_virus_test_file.htm is one of them.

Hi,
to resolve this issue, I’d like some users who receive error 0xC0000005 to do some experiments:
1)check if avast.setup process is running, if it’s there, end it and start program update
2)stop avast! iAVS4 Control Service and run update again
3)send setup.log from avast4\setup to my email

If nothing helps, I’ll release test build with some debug info built into updater

Here is part of the log, looks like it can’t find a server to get the updates from???

Can you connect to Internet and browse?
Seems that some of the errors refers to Winsock problems…, not related to avast.
Are you using an account with administration rights? Or, on contrary, a limited user account?

Btw, you can download servers.def from here: http://download1.avast.com/iavs4x/servers.def
Save it to C:\Program Files\Alwil Software\Avast4\setup folder
Start the update again.

Tech,

it would seem to me that since attfuzz has reported here … it would suggest that internet connectivity via browser exists (since I know of no other way to report in this forum).
